I know a lot of people here in the states that don't get much of anything past 45 in their history classes. That my book even went to 92 seems to put me at an outlier position.

There is one thing : the Conferate States flag is a unique item, originally representing only the Conferate States, not the idea of racism. Anything beyond that is interpreted into it.
Nazi imaginery steals a lot from germanic/norse history and adds its own crap. The swasitika is a "good" sun symbol for millenia around the globe, found in almost every ancient civilization. The Nazis tainted it. They took a lot of other symbols to put them to use for their arian nonsense. Neo-nazis are still stealing unrelated symbols to use them for their own : the celtic cross, for example. Left wing people associate everything historical about germany as nazism. Even putting our flag on public display (outside maybe football season) is frown upon by a lot of people.
German extreme left wingers try the easy way out of their historical responsibility by trying to destroy/hate/slag everthing Germany related; the right wingers try to misuse it.

Fun fact: most people don't think of any of the three flags of the confederate states of America, they think of the second confederate navy jack.

And forever, I guess. Is not like GOG.com wants to do this. They just have to.
There's this key selling site I won't talk about, that, due to EU Union Digital Tax law were obliged to charge us the VAT of our respective country. Before that law, they didn't have to.
On their FAQ they basically say that "they must do it" while, at the same time say that their mechanism works on local address and IP, "suggesting" you to trick the system.
I wouldn't trick it, since I believe this law was necessary, but, well... what I want to say with this is that shops want to sell without legal problems.
I don't see GOG really going against taking Germans money, they just won't sell the game to you if you ARE is Germany. But that's all.

I studied WWII at the last course of secondary (15-16 years old), but it wasn't until high school (16-18, non obligatory studies) that we learned about NSDAP live on Weimar Republick and Nazi Germany. Curiously, we had an entire theme about NSDAP and the Nazis, but they resumed Stalin dictatorship in three-four pages.

I mentioned this in here a few hours ago, gifting the game to someone in Germany does work.
