It's similar and different. There's room for both on the same computer. Both have benefits. The dev wrote a front-page post and a forum post on their Steam forums comparing the two.

Think of this as "Tesla vs Lovecraft, but roguelite across a series of stages". You don't get as many upgrades or wacky sets of power per run as in TvL, but what you do get persists across multiple stages of a "FTL-like" run. Crystals still exist for unlocking permanent upgrades.
