It is a consoling thought that there are such men and women, who fight for ideals such as the freedom of press, with a full knowledge what it may cost them. At unjustly high cost, indeed - but their cherished principle is likely to emerge only reinforced.

Just post this here as well. It is such a fundamental violation of European values - the freedom of thought and press aggravating the matter of hideously butchering a number of persons - that I have no heart for debate, just sense of solidarity and affirmation.

But let us take heart in the rallying around Charlie Hebdo, and France. Lives may have been snuffed, but not the greater principle.

Great link, I think this whole thing is boiling into one big shit storm. Why do people have to be so stupid and reckless over religion or take such offence to a simple picture?! I remember why I enjoy keeping to myself.

To me it is like urinating on the corpses of those satirist - spinning this a bit sharply in honour of those who literally loved the art of provocation and satire more than life.

Their very principle was to challenge and mock one-mindedness regardless of what corner it came from, "Charlie" after all mutating forth from a ban imposed due to mocking of excessive (they though) national mourning of Gen de Gaulle.

Pity they were not there when Napoléon was stuck to Panthéon in his twelve sarcophagi, eh!

Well, I feel sad and morally outraged, especially when journalistic tradition in France is of quite high quality - but not thou for a moment have I felt that these terror guys would have drawn a victory out of this in greater scheme of things.

I still think people on the main are pretty okei - though pack mentality tends to drive us to boorish behavioural alternatives that are worse than our "best" selves, I admit - I do not feel less secure, and I do not see the press cowering in fear, rather there is a solidarity push to rally around Charlie Hebdo.

Le Monde & France Television have pledged their support in persons and space to keep Charlie Hebdo going, I expect others will join. The work of these satirists is probably now better known than it otherwise it ever would have been.

Did these people want to sacrifice their unique "impassioned lives" - probably they wished it did not come to that, BUT: they still persisted, despite having been threated for years.

If you pay any mind to our fundamental freedoms, an if the UK press is exercising theirs worthily for that matter, they'll be fine, I think, in terms of meaning of their life-work.

I just saw this on the evening news, a terrible terrible tragedy, I am dreadfully saddened that such an atrocity could be carried out like this, in the name of "religion".

This is just the beginning. You can't negociate with them. They are ready to kill those who don't share their fanatism.They just deserve to die, slowly and painfully. No mercy for terrorists !

Theses individuals took innocent lives, what for? Because they felt the satirists were attacking them. These artists took the piss out of everyone, and if these individuals think they were so hurt they should have gone through the courts, not through barrels.

For the families of all involved - the artists, staff and police officers - I feel nothing but pain and hurt. This is an awful tragedy that they should never have had to face.

For the shooters, I wish only that their friends and families want nothing more with them. That their identities be revealed and that once the police find them they be arrested, tried in a court and sentenced. All the while being treated with all the care a fanatical individual deserves, so maybe reaching the police station is too much to ask.

I hope these criminals are found and killed. I hope anyone who collaborated with them are arrested. I hope more people in Europe wake up and recognize the enemy that is within their borders and that it is time to quit tolerating those who have neither any tolerance for freedom of expression nor any tolerance for the ethnic European peoples.

Care to explain? Enemies within? Ethnic europeans?

This is a great tragedy and a sad day for France and the world. My condolences to the families of the victims and I sincerely hope the French authorities are successful in tracking down and arresting the perpetrators.

However, since this thread is already taking a rather unfortunate turn, I think it's worth keeping this in mind. This massacre was committed by a pair of individuals. Above all else, the focus should be on apprehending those two individuals (and whoever might have helped them in the endavour) and making them stand trial for their crimes.

Easier said than done. As far as I understand it, France has a relatively large number of a muslim immigrant population. It doesn't help that a lot of the younger people among them seem to feel disadvantaged and put down by the French government as shown by past riots and whatnot. So some of that anger is quite likely due to very legitimate reasons. That said, that kind of violence and destruction only seems to make matters worse for them.

In any case, looking for a few real extremists in that kind of environment is like trying to find the proverbial needle in a haystack.
