montcer9012: ALL religions.
Not really, I am myself an atheist, but I don't see many Christians, Buddhists, Hindus or Shinto worshippers kidnapping people and beheading them, strapping explosives to their bodies and suicide bombing innocent civilians, forming theocracies were women are stoned to death and forced to cover their entire body except their eyes, etc etc.

I'm no fan of Catholicism but I can admit that Pope Francis is a pretty good guy and not backward thinking.

I no longer even buy the line that this is "extremism", I think that Islam at it's core is an unreformed primitive tribal religion which is opposed to social progress and modernism of all kinds. Yes every religion has extremists, but the proportion of extremists to "moderates" in Islam seems completely in favor of radicals, even the so-called moderate Muslim would be extremists if you compare them to your average Western Christian.

And yeah, in b4 someone mentions some Christian guy who bombed an abortion clinic a decade ago, come on Muslims are doing this horrible things right this minute. There are Muslim extremists in Nigeria who kidnapped schoolgirls and enslaved/raped them because "our religion allows us to have slaves".

This is literally the first time I've heard an atheist defending Christianity as NOT all extremist nutcases. Thank you.

The Crusades? The Inquisition? The Witch Hunts? XD Yeah I know it was a long time ago but every religion, with the exception of Wicca and Buddism has a few nasty skeletons in the closet. I'm not saying that puts everyone on an even keel but there is no sense in denying these things.

It annoys me that so many atheists criticize the American Evangelical types with their "Intelligent Design" theory and everything, yet completely ignore the most murderous and primitive religious maniacs in the world. I mean come on, if an American bible basher wants to teach Intelligent design alongside religion that's bad, but it's in a different universe altogether than people beheading people for "blasphemy", stoning women to death or how evil acts. I mean in the Middle-East being an atheist will literally get you killed.

religious extremism is something people are being pushed into. War for example produces a lot of them.

Yeah, thank you TinyE.

I was going to say that I agree with most catholics since that religion is the most accurate to modern times. However, they do that because Jesuits aren't stupids, in fact, very smart they are; those who don't evolve, extinguishes. Unless you try to claim by force what you couldn't by right.

I did not take further analysis on the subject because religion topics aren't so cool to talk in forums; not everyone will take different opinions as that, just opinions; some other will take opinions offensives so I don't want to anyone misunderstood me.
OT and then I'm going to bed...

"In fact, very smart they are."

That's twice now. He did it a couple of days ago and I didn't pay it any mind but now I'm beginning to think he might actually be Frank Oz.

Oh well, Red Wings game starting and I'm going to fall asleep watching that. Later. :D

So the question is, when will Islam grow up and join the mature religions? Though I guess with over 1.5 billion practitioners, even a 0.1% violent extremist ratio turns into a scary number...

Crosmando: When is Islam going to get out of the middle-ages?
A fair question, and as usual no one gives a serious answer. Seems like everyone assumes it's a loaded question aimed at encouraging bigotry but I don't think so, it's a question fair and square.

You can't reform Islam from the outside, and certainly not with force. If you put pressure on a group from the outside, the group will only hold together more strongly. Violence only breeds more violence and can go on forever. What I would like to see is the bulk of Muslims taking to the streets and openly and clearly protesting against Islamism. Such voices are too few.
Or even better, if the Muslim community would clean house and get rid of the bad apples in their midst (the small violent minority) then that would be an immensely great step towards building trust and bringing society as a whole together. And by getting rid of the bad apples I don't mean self-justice but dragging the Islamists to the police stations and handing them over to the hands of the law. So far I'm not seeing this happen but I believe this is the only way to stop the black & white us vs them trench growing bigger and bigger.
you know, long time ago, confucius once said:

extremists are always part of a healthy society (direct consequence of free will, speech, opinion and freedom of assembly)
Time for world leaders to bravely denounce the attack and not the religion.

That means you found the proper and universal criminal concept all what involve it, don't you? Because, I am not sure which police in the world is the right authority to claim for those people fate. A straight answer will be "The police depot city they live in". Therefore, which will be the acts to condemn Islams?

A government should not have the authority to decide others peoples fate, rather when rights gets violated, kinda like HiPhish express several post ago (Which, by the way, make his point very clear). However, some hypocrisy still behind goverments authority.
