Wishbone: If I could just learn how to build a wall that isn't just background, preferably with a door in it, I'd feel like I'd accomplished something worthwhile :-\
One of the most basic thing is to learn how to build a house and I would definitely watch a tutorial for that. Also, jump around and find an NPC called the Guide. He'll give some beginner tips along with some useful information on what items does if you show them to him.
I love Terraria, and whatnot, and this game looks cool, but I haven't played Terraria in forever! I am so excited for 1.3 to come out!
Any chance it will make it to GOG?

Nirth: In the beginning one could say it's more of a sandbox and you have to "activate" all the stuff on your own. You could watch a tutorial let's play that will present the basics but I would stop after that to avoid spoilers.

That's actually the problem of those survival games (and roguelikes), theres a ton of stuff to do and nothing that explains why or how. I've been playing Don't Starve Together and i have a page already open on the Don't Starve Wiki because i end up picking stuff that i don't know how to use and i'm not going to waste time clicking on everything or searching for answers.

I would recommend that you gather a group of friends and play Terraria with them, it's more fun that way and easier if there's someone amoung them to explain what to do.

More Terraria is a good thing, although I would have preferred news on the 1.3 patch. It sounds like this may be made by a different developer and thus not affect development of Terraria itself; given the competition from Starbound, Magicite, and plenty of others I will be curious to see how this does.

I'm afraid that presumes several things that might not necessarily be true:
1. That I have friends who already play Terraria.
2. That I have friends who want to play Terraria.
3. That I have friends.

;-)
It looks like the graphics style of Starbound a lot. :-P

jdsgn: This game is way too addictive.

tinyE: The Lucas Arts stuff is the only reason I took a break from it. Well that and it becomes frustratingly insanely hard once you kill the Wall of Flesh.
I'm still digging in the first dungeon where I found some secret room with a Mona Lisa painting.
To the other direction, I found something strange. There is a dungeon with very hard enemies, day and night alike and the entrance consists of a material that cannot be mined. ??
Hmmm i'd love to try this game, and starbound...

Terraria is fun, but I am always stuck after building my first house, and after a week in game of nights I am dead, and don't even let me start digging underground lol.

Starbound looks fun.... I have been waiting for it to come out of beta for a long time, I want them to release the game fully, I learned my lesson on pre-release titles lol... I will wait until all the work and whatnot is done.. but Starbound looks fun.... Terraria Other world does as well.

Either use explosives to get to it or wait till you have a better pickax. You really can't do anything with it right now so just wait for the better pick and save your explosives because those are pretty expensive.

Here, this is essential. It might have been posted already but I just woke up and haven't looked. :D

Yeah, you can sorta do it on your own but it's better with friends and help. It's better if you read the wiki on what to do in general, at least then you have a direction...unless you just want to build...

Honestly they all look fun. I also heavily enjoyed WindForge :)

When digging down at night always cap the shaft above you that way nothing can land on you and you'll be a lot safer.

Digging straight down is dumb, mostly because if you die you can't use the tunnel... Unless you have something to let you slide down, or you have a lucky horse-shoe so you don't take fall damage...

Awww?? :( It's a wonderful game to play, i love making ships... Hmmm i'd offer help if i could. There's huge frame drops as there's more it has to keep track of, which ends up when you get fps in the single digits you need to save & reload to get it fast again...

It's called ROPE!!!! :P I never go anywhere without a shit load of it. Digging down is a must especially later on when you are digging hell tunnels. Also you need practice for going strait down when dealing with The Corruption. ALSO baddies can't climb ropes so that eliminates one entire direction they can't follow you in!
