I'm not sure what game reviewers tend to use but Windows since at least 10 has a built in overlay that activates by pressing the logo key on a gamepad (this button is dedicated for operating system use). There is supposed to be a hotkey to activate it on keyboard as well but that doesn't seem to work reliably for some reason in my experience. By default it leaves screenshots under Videos\Captures in png format. I haven't had it not work yet, although possibly there are still cases where it doesn't work. It can also take video and by default records in the background so that you can save the previous minute of gameplay at any point (search for game in windows settings).

Usually you can leave a gamepad plugged in and not otherwise use it but occasionally there are issues. I particularly remember Venetica having a bad bug where if you had a game controller attached but didn't use it the attack button would just not fully work in some areas. But that game had plenty of other bugs too. I think I've also seen one or two games that insist you must only use the gamepad if it is attached and maybe one or two others that only show gamepad keys when a gamepad is attached. A few games don't recognize the gamepad if you plug it in after the game is started but that shouldn't affect the ability to use the overlay.

I'm mostly not playing games on Linux at this point but there I use scrot from a window manager hotkey, although as I recall there were sometimes issues there as well of fullscreen games being able to grab exclusive keyboard input. I do still often play kmahjongg on Linux.

True. The "Gamebar", or whatever MS calls it. You have to have it enabled in the settings and then can make it show up with WIN+G IIRC. I've used it in the past to quickly capture videos, but it should have a screenshot function too. Worth a shot.

FF7 fully modded

A short guide on what has been used, as well how and what to use i will do on another topic; as this is so far not a GOG game but who knows... what the future brings.

My emphasis was to be as close to the original as possible, yet still able to push that extra OOMPH i would expect on a modern hardware. In most cases it has simply become scaled up by AI and manual edits, along with many other improvements. The FMV are 30 FPS, all the other content ingame is 60 FPS now. Almost any content with the exception of the start menu and FMV are now widescreen and the characters are now fully voiced.

In the original release the FMV and battle mode was 15 FPS, other content was 30 FPS. Guess a awesome thing this game was still playable, considering the heavy technical limitations and the methods used on how to make something special happen.

People who use a different battle menu does not seem to understand the original intention and its "charm", so i tried to bring up its unique characteristics even more, which is perfect and does not need further edits. As the design is basically some sort of "punk" with "neon elements" and a lot of details are bringing this "puzzle" together so it looks "in one shape" and no other shape. The characters are the typical Japanese Chibi style, one of the oldest games using this style fully in 3D.

Bugs fixed

Whats surely interesting, in the "remastered fan edition", after a scene you meet Aerith in the night time which can be seen clearly, so it got some dark pale colors. On the original it is day time. After a ride with the train, when they arrive, it is day time once again. There are many of such "variations" but in general it is very close to the original.

FF8 partially modded

Biggest challenge was to avoid the DRM, which was successful at this point using "sensitive methods" (i was only using tools, nothing else).

However... although the game is as well using the most advanced "graphic driver" which is capable of modding or using mods, so it is at the same time a modding tool. This driver, used on FF8, is not very old and it only recently was becoming pretty mature. Unfortunately, almost any mod is still using Tonberry which is a pretty old manager with a raw graphic driver. It got limited capabilities, yet it got a lot of support thanks to its age.

I use FFNx now on this "unlocked" FF8, yet only a few mods are activated as there are simply just a bunch of mods available. Still, this graphic driver is the future and even more recently a true manager was released known as "Junction VIII". Not that i use it, my "workaround" is incompatible with... because this manager was adapted to the Steam launcher, on purpose. I can mod it without... because all i need is FFNx, the graphic driver...

How its done is surely more complicated than on FF7, i may do a guide at some point. As i said, not even mature yet, as it still will need way more mod support, which can take many years.

Sure, i hope in the rather far future we may see it on GOG but this chance is surely way lower compared to FF7.

Using the new driver, a optional NTSC color gamut can be activated; which in general looks more bright and vivid. Not sure what is more close to the "originally intended colors", as the ones making the PC port surely tried to calibrate the source color, which surely was NTSC. However... sRGB as the consumer-standard is the weakest of all color gamuts and any screen able to meet the sRGB standard is actually close to meaningless. Nonetheless... most screens barely can reach 100% on sRGB and any "higher" standard is rather a myth. In this aspect the old CRT monitor was not weak at all... because the best of them had a outstanding color gamut which is still a challenge for many modern screens. I guess the best match is the very last Pana Plasma or the newest OLED-monitors... all the other monitors as far as i can say are weaker considering the gamut and in general the colors are rather "cold" (a lot of blue, less red colors) and "less accurate".

The industry on the professional level is not using sRGB, as it is simply "to weak"... so sRGB is mainly a consumer standard which is stlll the most popular as "almost any screen" is able to meet a high accuracy there (low demand...), so it is easy to calibrate the colors. Anyway... for graphic enthusiasts it got a bad smell. If a srceen even got difficulties with sRGB... well it is REALLY a crap screen, i can tell.

Regarding, why not every mod has already become transfered over to "FFNx" is simple: Because the "chief" of the field texture upscale project, of the most important mod known as "Project Angelwing", wants to sell his/their mod on Patreon. So, the creators of FFNx are not gonna move this mod to their library, because this mod is basically "commercialized" and owned by McIndus...

I do not want to judge, just out of respect toward someone actually doing real and great work... but for sure many of the stuff from "Patreon" i generally consider questionable. Although, he is not the first one selling his mods (sometimes even more than that)... it seems to be increasing... and it can sometimes reach a point where it can "cross a certain line".

So i thought i bought the game, instead i bought some i guess multiplayer maps. It looked like such a cool package. At least i can play while i wait for the next discount to arrive :(

Added almost fully modded FF8 now, including those "mods" either paid, made public or transfered over from old versions that are not paid (at that point), not going into details here... lets just leave it as it is and hopefully the creator may at some point become "more social" once again. Everything running in FFNx as already mentioned. The only thing missing is widescreen, this is something FF7 is still ahead.

Money is important but... it can be short living and true art... can live forever... thats what GOG and its users should stand in for, and even the creators of mods if possible.

I mean, Square Enix was spending a lot of money for a "PC Remaster" port, and what we got? A blurry ugly mess. Without fan mods, this game would still be a mess...
