Filling stations or petrol stations, but that is not good as many vehicles use Diesel oil, not petrol. Gas station has a bit of the same problem as it can stand for gasoline or gas. Some large vehicles use actual gas.

It was a term given to the1934 St Louis Cardinals because they were foul mouth, dirty, unkempt and evidently reminded other players of people you'd assiociate with being/working at a gas house.
