amok: i know i am going about it, but this is the last post, i promise. just to show how flexible the game is, these are two machines i built for the same puzzle

not really, it is much more accessible than Zachtronics previous games, and the free and open form of the game mean you are looking for a solution, rather than the solution. The game give you all the tools from the get go, and there are no penalties, which means you do exactly what you want to complete a level. Whether you then want to spend time optimizing your creation, or just see
what kind of silliness you can do. The game has a very gentle learning curve and a very good tutorial which teaches you everything you need to make the machines work. As it gives you all the tools you need from the start, complexity is introduced by the nature of the inputs and outputs, not by giving you new things to learn as you progress.
Basically, it is easier than it looks, and while you will spend some time on each level finding a solution, it never feels frustrating, and in the end when the thing is running you end up feeling very smug and clever.
