Here are some pics from the Purolator 500 race @ Atlanta Motor Speedway, which was part of the '95 NASCAR Winston Cup season (single race event).

jamielt: Vythonaut, amazing pictures as always! Whilst I recall you mentioning you don't like modern F1 sims, have you tried Automobilista? I'm sure as a sim petrol head you are familiar, it really is worth checking out. The Brabham BT44 around the original Österreichring is up there with GPL as a white knuckle ride.
Thanks! Regarding Automobilista, as much as i'd like to try it because i've read a lot of good things about it (particularly about physics & AI, in which i'm most interested in), being Steam-only is a deal breaker for me.

You're in Europe. Are cars allowed to advertise cigarettes over there? It's been a no no for a while over here now. Wondering if that reflects on games. If I buy an F1 Euro release will it have a Marlboro sign on the cars that is subsequently programmed out for the US release?

Vythonaut, fair point and understandable. It's a shame it is Steam only as I think it would sell well on GOG. Current modern sims don't grab me neither; with the exception of Automobilista. I still race Simbin Race 07. I'm also a huge Sierra / Papyrus fan.

If only Papyrus would release a back catalogue.

Automobilista is a cracking sim, the only game since GPL which has invoked the same sense of terror vs. satisfaction.

TinyE, usually the original tobacco advertising is restored through mods.

Automobilista is an exception as far as I am aware. The sim is produced by a Brazilian team, the original tobacco advertising for the period is included in the game although the branding (e.g. names) is not specified (probably for licensing). However the iconic Marlboro billboards from the eighties are present. I no longer smoke, neither would tobacco advertising cause offence nowadays, I just wish that other sims would follow suit - From an immersive or realism perspective it does make a difference.

It reminds me of the early days of Day of Defeat before the Source versions. The original propaganda textures and music; I know it's controversial to say, but it did add a lot to the atmosphere.

I really don't care either way. I think everyone has a right to make a buck but at the same, as a former smoker, I'm not crying any rivers over tobacco companies' having their signage restricted. It was more a matter of curiosity for me.

What I think is funny is that while every driver out there uses Valvoline and Goodyear, I would be shocked to find out if any of them smoke, at least now a days. A little truth in advertising never hurt. Like Olympic athletes trying to convince us they eat at McDonald's and drink Coke all day. XD

Anyway I'm WAAAY off topic here. Sorry. As soon as I get started on Keane I plan to hit this thread HARD! :P

Hell, even Scalextric (slotcars) in the UK have given up censoring tobacco liveries and now the models are issued complete with the original tobacco liveries. Scalextric recognised that a large proportion of the collectors or buyers are adults!

PC games are similar - if only they would take this stance.

No, they aren't allowed to do that and it's been that way for a long time (a decade maybe?); even before the ban was applied to the whole EU, i recall certain GP races to not allow tobacco advertising even way before that. Of course the ban does not only apply to motorsports but generally in any advertisememt, whether it is featured on TV, radio, press or street advertising.

Happy to hear this coming from a GPLer, but yeah, a shame it isn't coming here.

ps. something i forgot to say in my previous post: always use the quote function when you respond to someone (you may only keep the relevant bits of a post if you want -- this way you won't clutter the whole thread) for them to be notified of your post/reply. If i wasn't paying attention to the whole thread, i'd most possibly miss your initial post. ;)
I've seen that kind of picture so many times... ;)

immi101: i am getting Stardew Valley vibes ... :) never even knew you could produce biodiesel :o
what tileset are you using ? Never seen that before.

Matewis: Yep but it's a very labour intensive and time consuming process. Something like 2 days of work to create 20 liters :P.
tbh if you strive for efficiency then the whole farming thing isn't really worth it I think. same with most of the construction work. But efficiency isn't everything, it's just a whole lot of fun to build your own little farm and try to reach self-sufficiency. :)

Matewis: It's the retrodays tileset, or at least a recent update of it. I used to play using pure ascii but there were just too many items so I wanted better visual cues to discern different objects.
hmm i'm always using the development version, guess I just haven't cycled through all the available options in quite a while.
really like the look of retrodays a lot ... except for creature graphics. find them often hard to spot & distinguish. (but that might be sth you get used to). will probably stick to the chesthole set for the cooler monsters :p

Nice to find another cdda player on here :)

Sure, depending on your playstyle farming may not be necessary or even useful at all. But yes, I like the idea of building a base and reaching some level of self-sufficiency.

After what seems like an eternity I finally managed to complete the mainly log wall around my compound. It's a nice feeling to be able to leave the curtains open now and not worry about the occasional wandering zombie seeing me (I have wander spawns set to active). I've recently finished my main workshop with a welder, forge and soldering iron all running off of storage batteries that are charged by solar panels. Next step is to route the same power to an electronic workshop, a chemical workshop and the kitchen.

Oh I don't have any difficulty spotting and distinguishing the monsters with retrodays. Though I should add that I moved to retrodays from the pure ascii graphics where monsters were all letters, which I found really hard to distinguish. It's weird, but for some reason the more primitive tilesets look better for me in these types of games. For example Dwarf Fortress as well. I tried several tilesets but most looked too weird for me and I ended up settling back on the simple ascii version. Something like retrodays for DF would be perfect though.

I was finally able to beat the last boss of Elminage Gothic with a lot of luck and now I'm playing King's Bounty: Crossworlds GOTY.
