Nightdive decided to switch development from Unity to Unreal 4, which in my book is a good thing. Now one can argue the new footage shown looks a bit generic, but it's still very much early days. Besides, if it's not a 1:1 remake I think it's for the better. I don't really need/want an exact replica of the original game. As long as they keep its spirt alive in atmosphere and (at least) some of the gameplay I'm good. I only hope they won't completely ditch some of the UI elements that looked pretty good in the first demo.
Still wondering whether I should play System Shock 1 or wait to discover it in that updated form.

Whetther is it or isn't an exact replica of the original may decide for that.

I didn't follow up the development details so, are they keeping the "90's virtual reality" gameplay sequences?

Also, I'm perplexed about the "freezing trick" in the trailer, I played the original back then and don't remember that feature. Is it because I never used that possibility or did they just add it to make it "modern"?

I have no idea. I don't think it has been really mentioned. Frankly, I always thought the whole VR section was the weakest part of the game - then and now - so I wouldn't be bothered if it didn't make a re-appearance. I'm sure SS2 didn't have it for a good reason. So, I wouldn't count on it.

That definitely wasn't a thing in the original.

Considering how well it controls in its 'enhanced' form SS1 is still good fun. It really is a unique game as SS2 plays quite differently gameplay-wise and mechanically. There hasn't been anything like it before or since. I expect the remake to be quite a bit different.

I think there's some value to play the original, only to get a feel on how original the game was back when it was released. The remake doesn't look bad, but after having played the demo it really felt like bioshock came before.

Pick it up without a doubt. It is dated and quite clunky in some regards but you won't appreciate the remake as much without at least trying the original. To be honest, I had a lot of fun with it despite the fact it kicked my butt lol.
I do already own it. In this game's case, I'm not too interested in the historical value of the original or its old-school feel by itself, as I played the original SS2 (one of my very favorite games) and a whole bunch of games of the SS1 era. I don't feel any historical curiosity. I'm only interested in the cool gameplay and universe and design and stories and dialogues of System Shock - its intemporal value. And hoping to experience the best version of it, for its own sake. Not to know "how it felt back then".

But if you people say that the update won't add enough to the experience to justify postponing it so much, then ok, I'll dive into GOG's current version.
Hm the new footage looks really nice, i just hope they'll improve on the character models, those zombies dont look too great yet.

Really hope this turns out well, i liked the tech demo already and how they kept the colorful style of the original. would be great to see it finished.
Man I hope this doesnt end up like DNF.
I wonder if the engine switch was driven by licensing and cost considerations. Anyway, all I want from the remake is the same story and same voice artist for SHODAN. Or, why not even re-use the original files?
Participated in the Kickstarter. As far as I'm concerned, as long as they are still able to complete project within a reasonable amount of time and the end result is a fun game I'm fine with this. I'd be much more concerned if they made the switch later in the year.
sounds good to me - not a big fan of unity engine here - while a few really good games were using it recently and there it was utilized "okay" - somehow the engines limitations became apparent quite often (e.g. in Dreamfall Chapters - especially b4 them upgrading it to a newer unity version and b4 optimization - ofc can also have sth do to with the developers being inexperienced with the engine)

Even after using the newer engine with some optimization it was pretty iffy in parts.

Considering I've never seen quite such performance issues as present in a lot of Unity games as in comparison to the majority of Unreal games, AAA or indie, the engine itself seems to be quite taxing.
Not really impressed by the new alpha footage trailer but it's still too early to make a judgement. I hope that the game turns out OK when it's finally released.
