I suppose it has gotten more relevant since story has gained a larger role in video games and love stories for the protagonist or side characters are engaging stories to tell (Final Fantasy X, Mass Effect) and given players like to self-insert and the vast majority of the population is straight, characters are assumed to be straight. Doesnt change the fact that there is alot of fan theory and speculation of characters possibly being gay because alot of game stories also shy away from romantic interest and keep it strictly platonic to keep their lower rating (Kat from Gravity Rush and Raven, Snake and other characters in MGS series). Also why alot of games shy away from excessive violence and torture.

And with all those huge black lies, wholly private matters had become 'proof' of gaming journalism 'corruption'.

By the end of the month (August 2014), a prominent feminist media critic had received targeted death threats that doxed her parents' house. Several gaming journalists finally remarked how this shit was going way, way, waaaay too far. And of course these articles were then interpreted by proponents of the hate group as the ultimate insult and "proof of collusion".
