firstpastthepost: I thought the remastered original trilogy was released on PC?

*edit* Guess not... not that I can find anyways. Apparently there was a fan made pc remaster of the second game that actually looks decent.

*edit again* okay... wikipedia says 2,3, 4 and homecoming are available on pc.
The games did originally release on PC, but I meant they are currently not sold in online stores. Steam only has Homecoming.

antrad88: This guy knows what he is talking about, I agree with everything, except that I actually never finished The Room, it is one of rare games I gave up on, while Silent Hill 2 I played 3-4 times. I really should replay the first 3 games again and give 4 another chance.

Unfortunately Silent Hill games are not sold for PC, but you can find it on abandonware sites. It is so absurd Konami is too busy making pachinko machines, while such critically acclaimed series is left to die.
High five!
I pray constantly that the series, especially SH2, gets a release here. And the many, many people who have wished for them would agree. As you said... so absurd they're left to the sands of time. :c The series deserves better. We deserve better!

Sorry bhrigu, if you were hoping for legit purchases only in this thread. Whatever your stance on abandonware is, I hope you find a way to try it out one day!

(oh and fun fact for antrad88: I am not a guy, heh)
Silent Hill 2 PC Port is a horrible mess man. It is playable but really not up my standard. I doubt (though I don't say impossible) GoG can fix it if there's no source code available.
Jo on the grudge

Look here

Damn it, Dolphin emulator!

There's a guide out there which details how to make SH2 PC into a better condition, HD mods and so on.

bhrigu: I am mainly interested about Japanese horror games in this thread, but that should not prevent you from suggesting any other related good games. :)

So, yes, you can suggest East Asian horror too.
:)
Cool! I recommend the following:

White Day: A Labyrinth Named School
An obscure Korean game that came out in the early 2000s and pioneered the gameplay that Amnesia would later popularise. It was slated for a release in the UK in 2004 but that was quetly cancelled. Luckily, you can download a fan-tanslated version here.
There is also a pretty faithful remake, which you can find here. Never mind the "mixed" reviews, it's pretty good, but the original gets some extra creepy vibe simply because of how unknown it is. If you're unsure about the remake, it regularly goes on 75+ discounts.

Detention
I raved about this game on this forum pretty much every other day, so I'll keep it short: The best point&click adventure in recent years and one of the best stories in video games EVER! You can buy it DRM-free (& extra Steam key) on Playism or directly on Steam.

Clocktower (SNES)
I only played the original SNES version (there is a version for Win95, but unfortunately, it uses midi music which sounds nowhere near as cool as the SNES version) and it's bloody brilliant. Perfectly captures the atmosphere of a Dario Argento horror movie and the Goblin-styled soundtrack is some of my favourite video game music ever. You can find emulated versions all over the net.

Those are my top 3 picks. There's an Indonesian game called DreadOut which I thought was kinda meh, but you can get that on Playism (DRM-free & Steam key) right now for just over a Dollar, for that price you might as well give it a try. Gog also has The Coma, a Korean sidescroller somewhat reministent of White Day, but I'd stay away from that one, it's frightfully boring. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if The Coma was a test-the-waters-type release for Asian horror games and gog now refuses all Asian horror games because The Coma underperformed - which would be a shame, because The Coma is a pretty bad game, while White Day or Detention are absolutely brilliant.

Calling it a horrible mess and only playable is greatly exaggerated. I don't know about modern systems, but I had no issues with it when I played it on my Windows XP computer. Reading the article on PCGamingWiki it seems some PC files are of lower quality, but it is nothing that would impact the overall experience. If you didn't read it on the Internet you wouldn't even know about it. The same is happening with Halo Combat Evolved. I played it several times on my PC with no issues, enjoyed the game a lot, just to find out on the Internet that Gearbox has completely ruined the game and that it is an unplayable mess on PC. What the heck have I been playing then ?

The biggest "problem" with SH games are fixed camera angles and tank controls, but those are the same on the console versions and were common for this type of games from that era like Resident Evil, Nocturne or Alone In The Dark. Since Silent Hill has much less action and is more about exploration and atmosphere it doesn't matter that much and like personthingy said above it adds to the uncomfortable feeling of playing the game.

tinyE: Are there really that many Japanese games about prostitutes?

Oh wait, that says "horror".
To be honest the way Japanese girls moan in porn could be counted as horror, sounds like a F1 racing car or something.
Nintendo products are a bit of rarity here given, as far a I know, lack of any kind of official support.
So finding games for their consoles will not be easy.

Thanks for such great suggestions. I will stick with easily available titles.
Also I am interested in Detention, as from the reviews it seemed to be a pretty great title.

I really hope GOG will try to increase their catalog with more classic games and make them perform decently on modern systems. Also, perhaps they can realease versions that use emulators (some games here do use console emulators, don't they?).
The Gabriel Knight games have a Japanese chick sidekick if that counts.
Daikatana too but that is horror of a different kind.
