Does anyone know if it's possible to use a Steam controller on non-Steam games? I read that the API has some DRM of some kind on it, but does that mean that it would be impossible for a game to exist that would allow it to be used outside of Steam (without hacking)? And if it is possible, has it been done and does anyone have any examples?

This might help. The main thing here is that you will need Steam in order to customize the controller settings. I have tried the Steam controller for The Witcher 3 from GOG Galaxy, and it works just fine.

Out of interest, why? I mean its designed to work with Steam, so if you use that then its probably great. If not, xbox controller, and mouse and keyboard. Doesn't add anything other than a trackpad thingummy which is still inferior to mouse.

It is far superior to a standard controller in it's preciseness, but still inferior to a mouse. For those (like me) that would rather crawl through a hundred miles of shit and piss than use a keyboard/mouse the steam controller is superior to those other controllers you mentioned in terms of precision in shooters especially.

That could be one reason why.

How did you manage to crawl through a hundred miles of shit an piss in the few minutes from me posting to type that post in?

LOL. Still, I really would rather crawl through all that shit and piss than use this keyboard/mouse for any game that utilizes WSAD movement and controls.

BTW, to answer your question, that function is coming in an upcoming patch. Yes, I own a Steam controller myself and am waiting on this new functionality. Just wanted to let you know it is in the works and it has been promised. Just not sure when.

As far as Im aware all you need to do is add the .exe of your game into your steam library by using the "add game" feature. That way when you launch big window mode, you will be able to set the custom mapping for your controller.

Dammit, I had hoped you would upstage him with something like this. So I took the effort to make a picture for you.

Well I don't have (and don't intend to get) a Steam account, but I think the controller is amazing. I'd like to get one if I can use it with other games.

As for the compatibility issue, do I understand correctly that the only thing that makes it hard to use outside Steam is that there wouldn't be a built-in way to set the control configuration, but that one is being created now and that really, as long as the game can write the file then it should work?

OldFatGuy: Do you want to crawl through piss and shit? Because that can be arranged. Really though, if you like a mouse but not a keyboard, then why don't you just hold a game pad in your left hand for the analog stick and use a mouse in your right hand?

What would you lose from making a Steam account? You don't have to buy anything but the controller itself.

WTF? Did I say something to offend you? Whatever I did, I'm sorry.
Related question: What if I want to use the controller on an open platform that Steam does not support?

For example, what if I want to use it on a Raspberry Pi? What are my options here?

Basically, you would have to write a driver. You would lose the big advantages of the Steam controller, the configurability. You'd have to emulate a regular gamepad, and as long as you have to do that, might as well use an XBox 360 gamepad.
Look 'ere folks, I'm crazy. I want to use the Steam Controller on my Android games. In the same way I could use an OTG cable to connect a USB controller to my Android and play games with it, or a Bluetooth controller with the Android device.

Can I do the same with Steam Controller? Thanks.

To my knowledge, that isn't do able. But you never know.
