Valve likes to play on words, but it would have been punnier if you could download your games from Source or make games with the Steam engine.
perfect name, one must always remember who really owns his collection of games there - tighten the "valve" and no steam for you haha.

timppu: Also, the fact it is not directly related to gaming is an advantage in case Valve decides to expand the service beyond games.

CharlesGrey: Such as venturing into the market for cleaning devices or second-hand locomotives.
Those included, but I was thinking more of a total world domination, in all aspects of life. And by world I don't mean only the Earth, but far beyond. The whole universe, not necessarily only even in this dimension.

Steam is a very fitting name, i fear... Your *ownership* of a game there goes *poof*, vanishes into thin air! You *rent* games bound to an obligatory client, you never choose which *version* of the game to play, *updates* are unavoidable and mandatory coming automatically and some of them, even *remove game content* (GTA Vice City + San Andreas, for example)! Steam and foam, air, thin air! POOF!

JDelekto: I do believe they started off as Valve, it was then after they let out Steam.

227: Guess it's a good thing that Naughty Dog didn't have the idea first, then.
I think it's a matter of the service being named after a product that comes out of the eponymous thing that the company is named after.

Of course, that means if Naughty Dog had founded a digital distribution service, it would probably have been called Dog Shit.

Ooooo. I get it.

timppu: Ok, but what would you want it to be instead?
Xtra Games. And they you could do a whole bunch of marketing about how much Xtra fun you have at Xtra Games!
