kbnrylaec: Last time Star Control series came back, GOG said nothing about it.
Many people do not know that they can buy Star Control series, and this announcement appear now, just after they remove those games again.

GOG have very very poor communication with their customers.

timppu: Yeah. For instance Valve is quite on the other planet, they even send someone always to my doorstep to inform me personally that they are going to remove some game from the Steam store in the future, and also if some removed game ever comes back. /sarcasm

You start sounding like SimonG (rip) with your constant bitching about GOG.
Wow, a name I haven't heard in a long time!

Experiment513: Can't you guys/girls make a service that, if a game gets removed, that split second before that happens an order is been made if you don't have the title yet in your library? :-P I missed Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth for example. :(

Konrad: Oh, I like that, sounds convenient. Should be opt-out by default, yeah? ;)
Definitely! Just make sure that the opt-out switch doesn't work correctly at launch, then let the ensuing merriment on the forum stew for about a week.
Bummer :(

Guess that's what I get for not grabbing them as soon as they "came back" - I hesitated because I didn't know when / if I'd get to them to play - but it would have been a nice option if I ever had a hankering for these classics.

Should probably grab a more recent freeware version of Ur-Quan Masters before they shut that project down too. I have an old version of it around somewhere.
Thanks for the heads up, I'll snap up RCT3 and be on my... 25 DOLLARS?! I bought a disc of this thing a decade ago for FIVE! No sale, no deal.
Shame Star Control is enjoying this state of "ping pong". Hopefully it graces this catalog again in the near future.

The Ur Quan Masters isn't shut down. Neither is the Ur Quan Masters HD Project. The data in those releases is owned by Toys for Bob since they don't include the name Star Control anywhere.

EDIT: Ah, misread your post. Leaving this up for the links for anyone interested though.

Sad to see any game go... I do own RCT3, though (would be a nice game if it was not so damn impossible to earn some decent money to build stuff).
It's like Starr Mazer DSP all over again.

HereForTheBeer: So Stardock and the other dudes decide the yoink the game Star Control games with little to no warning?

Yeah, not gonna reward that behavior with making a last-minute purchase.
Update 3/30: As a gesture of goodwill to make clear that our goal in this dispute is only to protect our Star Control rights and not any claims on the original DOS games, we have decided to suspend sales of Star Control 1 and 2 as of April 4, 2018 until this matter is settled.

You say that, but Brad Wardell is currently explaining to people on his forum how his Star Control trademark still covers things in UQM and it's only safe because of his 'benevolence'. Total BS, but that's his take on it.

Grab RCT3 while you still can!

paladin181: It's not bitching when it's a problem that could easily be rectified.
It is infantile bitching to claim GOG has "very very poor communication", when in reality their communication regarding this is far better than pretty much any other digital gaming store, mainly because the other stores wouldn't communicate at all.

avatar
paladin181: For one, GOG isn't Steam.
I have never understood that double-standard. People accept something from Steam they would never accept from GOG because... Steam is Steam? That makes no sense whatsoever.

If you think it is "very very poor communication" to not widely tell all digital store users whenever a single game re-appears on the store (or when it is removed for that matter), then you should apply that standard to all stores, not just GOG.

avatar
paladin181: For another, they try to inform us of game removals and resurfacing games. They fail a lot in those regards. But that's not the only place their poor communication skills come through, such as the recent kerfuffle with the profile pages and no customer base-wide email until AFTER the changes went live. It's poor performance, and should be called out at every opportunity because it is an EASY fix that they continually refuse to enact.
Ok then, maybe GOG just should stop all communication (just like Valve), and then all would be fine, right? After all, if they wouldn't try to tell us about game removals (just like Valve doesn't), then there would be nothing to bitch about, right?

Note: I am not saying people shouldn't suggest improvements to GOG, even I have done that (I was quite vocal regarding e.g. the embedded Galaxy installers on the offline game installers). I am mostly commenting the way like e.g. kbnrylaec always seems to put everything out of proportions with his negativity. I don't think I have ever seen him say anything positive about GOG anyway, maybe GOG stole his dog or something,

I bought RTC2 and RTC3 together in 2014 for $7.48. :-P

GOG established the standard. And again, this is not the only area wherein gog's communication skills are severely lacking. But yes, pretend this is all about game removal/reappearance announcements. If they didn't announce it at all, it wouldn't affect me in the slightest. However, since they have set the standard of "we will communicate this information to you" then they should do it well. Don't half-ass a job; if you're going to do it, do it right. The real problem is their overall communication within the organization and with their customers about actual important matters such as major changes to the privacy policy, changes to the site company paradigm, and changes to the way their site works.

So hyperfocus on this facet of communications (the fact that they try to inform us of game status) if you like to cite that the fact that they do it at all is incredible (it is) and bury your head in the sand about their obvious shortcomings because they deign to try to inform us about something. The things that matter to kbnrylaec are done badly. He is well within his right to try and get gog to correct those. I do the same when it comes to broken features and operations of the site. Why hate on him for trying to get gog to fix what's obviously broken?

what has Steam / Valve got to do with it?

it is like popping into a discussion about Holocaust and saying Hitler was not so bad, because Pol Pot was worse.

These things are not related. gOg can have bad communication even if Steam / Valve has worse.
