It never hurts to have more civilization, now does it?
Especially if it comes in the form of Civilization III, Civilization IV, and CivCity: Rome, three great entries in the wildly popular and critically-acclaimed franchise, with a whopping 75% discount attached to them!

Lead your nation of choice from its humble beginnings to its space-faring heights or take a close look at all the ways in which you can affect the lives of ancient Romans. All that stands between you and historical greatness is just one more turn.

The 75% discounts will last until May 22, 10 AM UTC.

I hate you. :)
Worse, I realized halfway through that I'd already read it years ago, but couldn't remember the ending, so I had to keep going...so now I hate myself, too.
I guessed what it was before even reading it, thanks to the quote, though I can't remember ever seeing that URL or seeing the page. It was posted in the "corny jokes" thread several years ago, and that's the only place I've read it.

Vovchigus: Bring Civ III and Civ IV to GOG Connect, please :-)
Yes, that would be great!

Vythonaut: Last night I was about to buy Civ IV but after trying the demo one more time, i'm still not convinced it's the great game everyone talks(-ed) about, so, while the discounts are great, I don't think I'll take advantage of this sale. Having said, what is missing from this sale is Alpha Centauri. ;)
I personally think it would be more awesome as RTS game.

You mean like the Total War series (TB/RT combo) or just pure RTS like Empire Earth? Either way, it would have some serious competition considering both TW & EE games are considered to be very good.

Prepare to become civilized.
Never!!!

(love the games, though...)

Would like to know from anyone who has played these games whether or not it would be worthwhile to play through any specific entry in the franchise (whether here or otherwise) first - always hard knowing where the best place to start is for simulation franchises like this

4 is known as the best in the series... 3 has a bit simpler mechanics (and there is a voice that prefers 3).

Notice these games are mostly played as open-ended strategy games with randomized maps. Few people seem to bother with the scenarios.

Ah, we really need Civ 1 and Civ 2 here. I still consider Civ 1 to be the best in the series.
Last I heard Civ II was virtually impossible to play on modern machines, can somebody clarify? Obviously I'd love to see Civ 1 and 2 here, but I don't know what the reality of the situation is.

I have Civilization II Multiplayer Gold Edition somewhere on game magazine dvd.
I will look into that.

If you have time, you might try some of the guides mentioned online (like on civfanatics or the Civ subreddit) - https://www.google.com/search?q=civilization+2+windows+7&rlz=1C1AOHY_enUS708US709&oq=civilization+2+win&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l5.4443j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

But don't feel obligated to. :)

EDIT: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/help-civ-ii-wont-even-install-on-win7-64bit.365874/

"civ2-2.42 is a 16 bit program that can't run on a 64 bit system. Civ2-MGE is a 32 bit version that will run, but there is a patch that is needed."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization_II#Release

"The game was re-released in 1997 as Civilization II: Multiplayer Gold Edition, which bundled both prior expansion packs and added options for networked and hotseat play, and features tweaked AI. All of the music tracks that were in the original release of Civilization II had been removed, however - only some of the "new" ones remained. The tweaked AI is also perpetually unfriendly, rendering most diplomatic functions useless."

Has anyone tried CivCity: Rome with Linux/Wine?

The retail version is rated Gold on WineHQ, but there's no rating for the GOG version.
Re CIV 2 and modern systems:
The original game and the two expansions were 16 bit programs which make them unplayble on most modern systems, but CIv 2 Gold is 32 bit and playable after some tweaking.
CIv 2 gold also has the 16 bit installer problem which many games have:The game it self is playable on a 64 bit sytem but the installer itself is 16 bit and does not work on a 64 bit systems. There are some workaround, though, but a pain in the butt.
