timppu: Has MGS3 ever been released on PC, though? If not, I consider it unrealistic it would be released on GOG either.

Or was it part of that MGS collection that is sold on Steam?
Yeah, MGS3 has finally released on PC on Steam thanks to the recently released Master Collection.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2131650/METAL_GEAR_SOLID_3_Snake_Eater__Master_Collection_Version/

I do think a big initiative with the current remaster/rerelease of alot of AAA and AA games on console is for devs to basically work on PC versions of their most popular IPs. Honestly surprised The Last of Us Part 2 wasnt released on PC with the remastered edition and do think Sony went through creating Last of Us Part 1 so they can work on a PC release.

MGS3 was just a revolutionary game when released on PS2 and is still arguably better than current releases with prettier graphics but shallow depth. Being able to pull off different CQC moves with different analog and button presses, the heal system and its easter eggs or things you can do. I do think MGS3 is the best entry in the franchise and a must play so its cool it finally came to PC.

Yeah, I also hope MGR sells well on GOG and encourages the company to get more AA games without DRM like Nier Automata. These are good games that are pretty old now and dont have DRM already.

Nier Automata would be one game I'd buy instantly from GOG for a full price.

Since you seem to know the console (PS2?) versions of MGS3 and hopefully MGS2 well... was there something specific in either game's controls that you feel couldn't be reproduced on PC?

The reason I am asking is because I recall reading that either game supported some PS2 gamepad feature that is not common on PC gamepads, maybe it was that the face buttons on the PS2 gamepads are analog, so you controlled something in those games by different pressure on those gamepad buttons?

Damn, I still have a PS2 console (which I haven't powered on for several years, it still sits there under my TV unused) and I don't even recall if it has analog face buttons, and whether any games I played on it, utilized them? Maybe some racing game did, ie. you controlled gas pedal by how hard you pressed one of those face buttons? Or then I remember it completely wrong...

If that was the case, then how did they reproduce that function on the PC versions of those games, either the original port of MGS2, or the Steam Master Collection versions?

Lord_Kane: Oh the campaign is out right broken and uncompleteable in C&C 3 iirc they made a change to the avatar in 1.09 (reduced health I think since people complained it had too much health or something dumb) and basically the mission is unfinishable, as they get wrecked.
Avatars only ever got buffs in patches, never nerfs, so that's not it.
1.05:
Avatar: Cost/buildtime reduced by 27% to 2200/22. Flamethrower upgrade attack power increased by 150%.

1.09:
· Avatar: Health increased by 25%. Pre-attack delay reduced by
33%. Main weapon's attack power increased by 25%.

I finished the campaigns on 1.0 (Avatar Warmech forever :P), 1.05 and 1.09. If anything, the NOD campaign is noticeably easier in later patches as they kept getting a lot of buffs.

But yes, again, starting from 1.05, it's the case of balancing for multiplayer, even removing fun things like loaded Scrin harvesters spawning Ion Storms.

Odd I alway felt it got nerfed, but I was never really any good at MP anyways so its problably a PEBKAC problem in that case or just my skills have degraded because when I tried playing CNC3's campaign again in 2019 during the Pandemic I just had issues finishing the mission...growing old probably.

I never understood why some RTS games dont maintain seperate unit info tables for SP and MP, it just baffles me. but oh well. EA is gonna EA

PS2 versions of MGS2 and MGS3 had pressure-sensitive buttons. For example, you needed to push the square button halfway in to "ready" your gun while a full press results in shooting. This was used in MGS2 to hold up enemies to shake them down for their dog tags as collectibles (and some needing more convincing to shake them down like shooting a lethal gun shot near their head or actually damaging their arm which was always cool compared to games now where that wouldnt be a feature). MGS3 used context much more, notably in CQC where how much you pressed down square also resulted in Snake "holding" the soldier for interrogation vs killing them with a neck slice (which resulted in alot of unintentionally dead soldiers lol).

https://www.reddit.com/r/metalgearsolid/comments/9q9lwn/metal_gear_solid_3_ps3_how_to_interrogate_someone/

Pressure sensitive buttons were removed from PS4 and beyond so players can interrogate with L2 I believe. I think the new Master Collection still requires gamepad but actions are linked to different buttons now like L3.

timppu: Since I consider this release as fabulous and frankly more unexpected (because it is a big Japanese title who usually seem to love their DRM), can you name some of those much more fabulous games that you (or the "GOG community", if such exists) are expecting instead if this?
Not expected, just hoped for.
And really, it can be all about the value we each individually feel. So your feelings don't surprise me, I just don't echo them.

And surely you are aware of the oodles of great games on the Community Wishlists, so where do I start really?

Anyway, here's a few, but there would be plenty more. How realistic many of them are as hopes is another matter.

DOOM: The Dark Ages
Doom 2016
Doom Eternal
Red Dead Redemption
Halo
Diablo series
Max Payne series
Black & White series
No One Lives Forever 1 & 2
Need for Speed series
The Sims Complete Collection
Tomb Raider (Rise & Shadows)
Warcraft series
Duke Nukem series
Perfect Dark
Goldeneye
Many hunting games
etc
etc

The tip of the iceberg going by my recollection.

And I am sure there are many more, plenty of which, like the Metal Gear games, I don't really know, and plenty I know even less about.
Daniel Craig's one and only 007 video game 'Blood Stone' would be nice to have on GOG as well.

It's not his only 007 game, there's also a FPS Quantum of Solace. It was quite decent, for a movie tie-in game. But then, I was more positive about the movie than most people, so maybe about the game as well.

Nice avatar, by the way.

Lord_Kane: EA did this alot with their strategy titles, C&C 3 and C&C 3 Kane's Wrath have similar campaign issues with 1.09 and 1.02 respectfully.
The conversation here actually made me look into the potential modding of BFME 1 and funnily enough, it's not really that complicated.

Currently in the process of making unit corpses stay forever on the battlefield (manually doing the changes from a mod intended for 1.03) and reversing some of the balance changes made in 1.02 (like the Orc Warrior increased vulnerability to slash damage), the original values are just commented out and replaced, so it is even visible what they were in the previous versions. Ultimately, I will also solve one of my main gripes I had - The upgraded vs unupgraded Uruks have vastly different attack speeds with the upgraded ones animations cutting off early. Managed to locate the animation timings for them, now it's a matter of time to just nail the timings so they look good in the game.

PS.:
There are some very funny dev notes in the code :D. Example from audio mapping for Rohan peasant groups:

ClientBehavior = RandomSoundSelectorClientBehavior ModuleTag_RSSCB
; This is a counter to the similar module in the RohanPeasant4. Without this,
; the larger a group, the more likely it is a woman's voice will be heard; until
; a 100 peasant group will basically ALWAYS be playing. This ensures that a
; large group of mixed peasants will still be led by a man. [Sorry, but that's
; Middle Earth for you -- just ask Eowyn!]
Chance = 5%
RerollOnEveryFrame = No ; For consistancy
VoicePriority = 32 ; Bossy man is high enough to overcome "bossy" women
End

or definition for Balrog's armor:
Armor BalrogArmor
Armor = DEFAULT 1% ; Likes to have things think they can attack him
Armor = SIEGE 25% ; siege weapons can hurt him
Armor = STRUCTURAL 25% ;Structural damage (Ent rocks)
Armor = MAGIC 100% ; Gandalf can really hurt him.
Armor = HERO 50% ; Other heroes can hurt him too. Watch out for heroes Mr. Balrog!
Armor = HERO_RANGED 1% ; Hero bow damage
End

JClosed: Hmm... I was hoping some JRPG goodness was coming. I still hope some long-established series would be sold on GOG at some time. While I do have a lot of those games already on Steam, I would happily (re)buy them here on GOG, just to get the off-line installer versions. And yes - All these games are DRM-Free (except for the Steam client dependency).

What are those games you ask? Well - I can say they are not everyone's taste, but that would be an understatement. I can name a few of them. In no particular order: Gran Blue Fantasy Relink, The whole Atelier series, The Blue Reflection series, Harvestella, The Rune Factory games, The Tales series with Especially Tales Of Arise, The God Eater series, the Star Ocean series. And I could go on. But also non-JRPG games could be sold here. For instance - We have all the Fallout and Elder Scrolls games here, but the big one that is missing is Starfield. I am sure there could be a non-Creation Club version here, like they did with the other games. Maybe the game is too new? Who knows...

Anyway - Sorry about that (mostly useless and bit stupid) rambling here. I apologize for that.
Let's just be happy with what we get, right?
I'll always be waiting for some DRM-free Squaresoft classics from SNES/PSX times, ported/emulated. Let's dream...
Let's say a PC collection of Romancing Saga 1-3, or Chrono Trigger + Chrono Cross. Nier maybe?
