Elmofongo: Been playing Starcraft 1 and 2 and Warcraft 3 back to back and man Blizzard has this simple, but deep RTS gameplay that no other games I know replicate it.

Which is all the more reason I like to play Wacraft 1 and 2.

Especially 1 judging by how simple it looks and plays.

Trogallart: These are both abandonware they are not maintained anymore by blizzard you can find both games on en.war2.ru for free, updated and patched so that they work on your modern computers :-)

More about that here:

1. You are wrong, it is not both games its just a semi-patched version of Warcraft II Battle.net edition with a DirectX compat patch to make it work on anything past windows 8 and to provide new gateways since blizzard stopped running battle.net service for Warcraft II BNE a while ago, which they named Warcraft 2 Combat Edition.

2. They only offer a download of the DOS Diskette (cracked) version of WC1 (which was the only release other then a Mac Version and a CD based release later on)

3. Warcraft I and II arent abandonware, Blizzard A) Still exists and B) still owns the rights the warcraft universe including 1, 2 and 3 and World of Warcraft an its expansions. They have for unknown reasons to not re-release Warcraft I or II on their Battle.net app or via another platform. (Steam, GOG, Origin ETC.)

nightcraw1er.488: None of those games are "abandonware". They have been made available free by blizzard on their store, however they still hold full rights to those titles. The site you link provides a re-implementation of the engine via a client nothing more, and blizzard would have them hanging outside their head office if it was any difference.
technically what war2.ru does its not exactly legal, but its not a reimplmentation per se, its just a patched version of War2 BNE with a new gateway patched in and a DDraw fix for more modern windows.

In addition:
I have no issue with war2.ru's existence, since blizzard refuses to make Warcraft 1 or 2 available in anyway for legal purchase, I say go ahead, use the version that War2.ru provides, it is safe and virus free, but for Warcraft 1 I suggest you look elsewhere, the version they provide is a cracked version of the floppy disk version, but if you can source a CD (I suggest EBAY) version it works fine on dosbox. I suggest you grab the warcraft mouse helper from pcgamingwiki as it uses black magic to implement more modern mouse controls in WC1, and it works with dosbox as well.

Same thing I did link the wikipedia definition of abandonware for a reason...
Abandonware does not mean giving up copyrights there are other terms for that.
Abandonware means not supporting and selling the product anymore which IS the case both for warcraft and warcraft 2.

More on that following on the same post from my previous answer.

And it is a good thing that they do not give up their copyrights because that way it protects you the consumer from getting scammed or sold a game that they Blizzard do not charge for anymore. This also prevents anyone from tarnishing the original game's legacy.
Good thing that it is just abandonware indeed, a good reason to get your game from there, where it is still actively supported and where you will find more players to play it with you.

Oh that means that the definition of abandonware has changed... oh well, I am going to keep my posts unedited.
also just to note, I have no issue with War2.ru's existence. if you read my post that is.
Well, I don't know if it is technically legal, but try this (Note: You need a full version of Warcraft 3 possibly with addon for this):

holy shit thats impressive.
Sorry, there were some non-working links. I corrected to the ones I used a few weeks ago. Please look at my post again.
Wc2 still sale at least in Retail shops (CD). Blizzard Shop mostly not available outside US (CD again).

war2 russian site created lo-o-ong ago - son never be legal (but more 10 years ago they provide only swap-version based repack). And they provide cracked repack created by "broken-hands" kids.
Same for old free warcraft clone-port that provide copyrighted game files (before Stratagus).

Now GOG and Activision-Blizzard announce GOG release - and i cant wait. Diablo 1 good, but not as Wc2 Bnet.
