For the first time I am going to try out a Total War game, and I have been told Medieval II is the best "classic" game in the series so far.

So I am a complete and utter noob, I never touched a Total War game hell if I am being frank I am not the best player when it comes to RTS games (My only RTS game I have beaten fairly was Warcraft 3 Reign of Chaos without cheats and even then I had to use cheats for the last 2 Night Elf missions) My problem is that I think RTS games favors players who are fast on the keyboard and mouse and can do a lot of multitasking.

So I saw the gameplay of the Total War and it looks like an RTS that favors more slower and methodical players with a pause feature I heard (sort of like Baldur's Gate?)

So any advice you can give me as a total newcomer?

And this is not the only game I have, I also have Empire: Total War and its Napoleon expansion.

Yes:

1: Empire and Napoleon are pretty dull combat wise, but have an improved diplomacy system (among some other things)
2: Start MTW2 as England - they're pretty good all rounders and will be able to field some really good mercenary units for crusades etc. They will also be able to teach you the importance of spears / cavalry / bows in the game (from varying angles).
3: Early on invade wales - you can leave Scotland for a bit, but not too long as they have a habit of storming York with ridiculous levels of troops (ironic that I'm posting this) - if you want to leave them and go diplomatic with them for a while, change York into a castle instead of a town (should have been a castle to begin with really, historically).
4: Produce a bunch of diplomats and send them onto the European mainland. As theres a FOW, you might want to reference a map and send one or more in the vague directions of Russia, Italy (and make sure you leave at least one next to Rome to appease the Poop... er... Pope!), Another beyond Italy and two down through France, Spain and North Africa.
5: As England, make sure you beef up the seafaring potential gradually (later you can go to the Americas).
6: Regarding the poopularity with the Pope - all factions are vying for power at all times, they WILL betray you. its a good idea to keep giginv gifts of map data to the pope (hence the diplomats travelling all over), and getting high enough on his radar you can launch an early crusade against (most likely) Milan - just the other side of france, lots of money, gets you a seat near the pope and some great crusade mercenray nutters in the area.
7: get low enough with the pope, you'll get excommuncated and might get a crusade against you.
8: on the campaign map (which is more civilisation-like), do NOT focus all your attention on one area - you might lose more than you think.

...I think thats what you should know without spoilers / ruining the game.

Edit: dammit... might have to reinstall now...

1. Is the Holy Roman Empire a playable faction?

2. There's a story and even then its based on history so we are alraedy spoiled ;)

I found Medieval 2 rather easy. I played as England, and pretty conquering Europe went pretty easy. The Archers are reall beasts, I think there was some particular Welsh archers unit that was awesome. I remember some battles where I had almost nothing but archers, or nothing other at all, and still placed on a hill they would be pretty much unbeatable. Oh, and screw the pope- conquer Rome, get your own pope, and party like it's 1154.

Yes but you have to beat the game once as one of the starting fractions to unlock it I believe, or you can modify a file to unlock all fractions from the start. This is what I always did.

You CAN modify some files to play as the papacy (I dont suggest it - same as the rebels - its no fun!).

2: there only a base Intro level of story and some historical happenings (mostly techno/socio-logical and rivalries) that pop up along with a few noted figures, beyond that, its very much a sandboxy type thing in other ways. I once played as the moors and ended up beating down both the mongols and timurids. (one side of the map to the other with no real territory held between).

I've also held most of eastern europe and constantly smashed the pope down as the only other catholic faction in the game.

As I remember, you can only unlock it through modding - just like the rebels. Its not an "in game" playable faction.

The holy roman empire is playable. I cant remember if they are playable at the start though. a whole bunch of factions unlock after you beat the game once.

I really like Venice in the game. They have the ability to generate a huge amount of income and there militia units are great. They are in a fairly turbulent area though

try playing as Hungary or Byzantine - good challenge and lots of good, varied battles.

Well the Kingdom of England was known for its highly trained archers.

Playing as England in Rise of Nations gives you the English Longbowmen unique unit ;)

Not until they took Wales and Scotland, learned about the longbow and forced training for all men every sunday.
Much the same as with the navy - that was at one point subsidised by a law requiring people to eat fish on fridays - thusly keeping the fisherman free to train as a form of naval militia.

Facisnating.

So that explains the evolution of the UK's almighty Royal Navy.

Is playing the UK in Empire Total War pretty much gives you the most OP Battleships?

Nah if I remember right they unlock when you beat the game with one of the starting fractions. Again if I remember right there marked as "end unlockable" while rebels for instance are marked as "unplayable".
