Well, Dr. Jones, I can't help you with your query since I've played neither Outcast nor Arx Fatalis, but I have Crysis 2 on my wishlist, so thank you very much for the chance~!
Thank you for the giveaway! Not interested for the gift, not participating, but i really wanted to comment Arx Fatalis to you! The game is a gem! Sure, it has its flaws, but is a legendary game. Very innovative. With many secrets. With choices on how to finish your quests (example: Let the young girl perish at the cult's sacrificial altar, have a demon summoned and slay it, or save the girl, butcher the priests and return her to her mother for a small reward?). It is essentially the Ultima Underworld Successor. Which i have not played, but still, arx fatalis amazed me. It also has cooking skills, potion crafting, fishing, smithing (make weapons and/or repair them) and many more! And its unique magic system, with runes and hand drawing (mouse drawing to be precise), is something entirely new and challenging!

As all RPGs, it has the unique items meant for endgame, a good range of weapons, ways to enchant your weapons and armor with different materials and benefits (example: never loose durability, have a dexterity bonus, have a strength bonus etc). The spells are many and very satisfying, especially graphically. There are also many hidden spells, which you have to search a guide for (or my post in arx fatalis subforum here). Dungeons, crawling, bosses, loot, everything is here. You cannot possibly go wrong. It also has some very nice features, like the special vision for dark areas or the torch item, the thieving tools for lockpicking, an entire "god" for final boss (evil one, though) and popular badass enemies, like liches, golems and evil warriors.

Riddles are present, too, as well as hidden quests (rob the bank!) and most importantly, hard to get into locations. Finally, me thinks the legendary actor who gave his voice to Garrett from THIEF series, has a good variety of roles in this game, too. You cannot miss it. I honestly have not played Outcast, but arx fatalis shouldn't be absent from ANYONE'S library. One of the FINEST old games!
Dr. Jones

I never play any of those games. But after seen both, i can tell you i recomended Outcast. At least for me it´s a special game, meanwhile Arx Fatalis seems just like another RPG. Not a bad thing but still, nothing from another world. Anyway, if you want to try Arx, it has a free demo.
Haven't played Outcast... yet. It's on my wishlist.

As for Arx Fatalis, I rage quit. Combat is a mess, magic is a mess, inventory/journal is a mess... it's a shame really, the story and the characters are interesting enough. I got about a third of the way through and then all of my savefiles got corrupted. -.- Apparently this is also a fairly common problem with this game. I just couldn't bear the though of starting over...

So yeah, Outcast seems like a good choice.
So far, I'm leaning towards Outcast. For those who have played it, how well does it play with a controller? I noticed Outcast 1.1 brings Xbox 360 controller support into the mix. I'm just curious as to how well that works.

Works fine with an Xbox 360 controller for me, even gives you completely rebindable keys for it. However, all in-game prompts are for mouse and keyboard, and you can't rename your save files (you can save without renaming them tho)
Bump. There is still a chance to win Crysis 2.
Not in & +1! :D

Thank you :)
I've played both and I definitely recommend Arx Fatalis, even though I've not even finished it (I did finish Outcast however).

1/ Both feature semi-open worlds. Outcast may be larger, but Arx is way denser and rewards exploration and observation.

2/ Sure, Arx Fatalis is not always easy to handle, and some fights are poorly balanced. Outcast offers a much more streamlined experience. Much less memorable too.

3/ Both games have a rigid main quest, but Arx Fatalis may be (re)played in different ways.

4/ Did you enjoy Dark Messiah Of Might And Magic? Dishonored? Arx Fatalis was Arkane's first game.

5/ Arx Fatalis looks better than Outcast (well, I think it does).

Not in, but another vote for Outcast.
It offers good immersion and storytelling. It's quite some time since I played it, but it left a good and lasting impression.
