tremere110: Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

If she issues one here I suspect GoG will comply because of the overwhelming risk of not doing so.

BrandeX: DMCA is American. GOG is in Poland. No one else has to follow the laws of foreign countries.

Poland is a signatory of the Berne Convention. This means that Poland has to honor the copyrights of other signator countries. So a DMCA strike would be the Polish equivalent which would still remove RCR:U. Now GoG could require going through the Polish legal system but I find that unlikely given how GoG has handled similar disputes in the past (they removed games like Pony Island without any official copyright violation notices).

That person might not even know it's being sold here.
What provision of the DMCA are they even relying on here? This is baffling on sooo many levels.

Klumpen0815: Can someone give a summary?

By now it looks like some dude with mental problems got hired to make a soundtrack for a game and then afterwards sued the devs for actually using said soundtrack.
Here is a time line of events for those interested:

BrandeX: They can't ban GOG Connect. You are just logging in with the Steam public token thing. They are reading the list of games on your profile.
Yeah, Steam prohibits GOG to use the login function company-wide as well as to mentioning it officially.

You still don't get it, do you? Do know what "company policy" means?
Any other gog games that might get removed?
So this thread reminded me that I have a Kickstarter Steam key for the game and another for the soundtrack that I have yet to redeem. I just tried to use them and Steam said they were invalid. Hopefully this gets sorted out.

Smannesman: If I understand correctly it's transitioning.
It isn't transitioning. It's pretending to be a woman, and its idea of womanly behavior is trying to wink wink nudge nudge falsely accuse cops of rape. I hope it goes to jail.
Isn't this DMCA only for US?
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a U.S. law. It only applies to the territory of the U.S.

I mean Steam can block the purchases at US.

Steam block game purchases if they don't have right to sell game at a country.
Youtube does the same they can block it regional.

They have to remove it completely because company(steam) is located at US?

So GoG is not based at US. If they block purchases from US will they be safe?

If you've got River City Ransom sitting on your shelf, now's as good a time as any to download it. It's not going away, but according to a statement by Conatus, they will be stripping the entire soundtrack and replacing it with a new one in order to continue developing the game in a timely manner.
I assume this means no Galaxy rollback when the new ost comes to gog, just like when Quake had its soundtrack removed?

Thank you for sharing this update.

What a hell of a shitstorm this is... I hope this move gets Conatus back on track and, hopefully, they won't come across another deranged composer like Alex Mauer when the next soundtrack is done. I truly believe that, at this point, she's not going to get the professional help she so desperately needs, so all that's left is to watch her career and her life spiral down into a cesspool of nothingness. River City Ransom: Underground is an awesome game and it's really sad to see a lunatic egotistical maniac trying to undermine the years of labour and love that the devs put into it.

As for Imago and Conatus, I wish them the best of luck with their current and future endeavours. This is sad and even infuriating but, in the end, I trust they will prevail over Alex Mauer's madness and downright lunacy.

I think that's a mistake. In the vast majority of cases it's better to settle than enter a big legal fight over copyright. Alex Mauer has proven to be difficult though. Starr Mazer tried something very similar even going so far as to offer Alex full rights to the music she composed. She not only refused but ramped up her attack by targeting fans of the game who had let's plays and videos of the game on YouTube. I doubt getting crushed in court by Imagos would be enough to deter her. Hopefully Conatus can continue without more harassment from Alex but I'm doubtful.

Thanks for the info! I just got myself a backup copy. If the changelog is to be trusted, this game hasn't been updated since July 5th, so I suppose it's still the original version.
They want to develop RCRU for consoles? I don't think that's a good idea. RCR was cutting edge in 1989. In 2017, it's vastly obsolete, and so is RCRU. RCRU is only going to sell to its niche: fans of the original game. It's not going to sell to console players from newer generations.
