I searched the forum, and much to my surprise I found that this game do not have a thread yet. This must be rectified!!!

RimWorld is a city builder and colony management simulation game, which is currently in alpha (though it has more options at this stage, and more playability than most other games only dream of when they are released....)

You start from 3 colonist (+a pet) crash-landing on a frontier plant, and you need to manage their survival and subsequent growth into a thriving city (or pre-industrial hamlet... or band of cannibals... or whatever). You are not alone on this planet, as it has other settlements ranging from traders to raiders, you need to build up an economy and prepare for defense .

The game has more options than you can shake a very rich-options-laden stick at, as well as depth deeper than the sound of one hand clapping. It also have full mod support, and a thriving modding community.

The game is very cute, using a graphical style and interface very similar to Prison Architect. I found the layout intuitive, and easy to learn. The only thing I felt a little bit lacking at the moment, was deeper research options, though the economy and survival more than makes up for it so far.

In short, it is a highly recommended game.

At the moment, you can buy the game directly from the developer, which gives you a DRM free version, as well as the option to redeem it on Steam.

edit - so... I need to go back to my latest little village, it turns out that the raider I have patched up and managed to convince to join my settlements is a nudist pyromaniac... I think i will lock in in a small room with a manhunting rabbit and let nature take its course...

No, it is completely different teams. RimWorld is made by Ludeon Studios, while Prison Architect was made by Introversion. They just use a similar graphical style. However, I must say I am having more fun with RimWorld than i did with PA.

RimWorld has actually been in development since 2013.
This game has been in development so long I keep forgetting about it.
Oh, I have been looking for a DRM free release of RimWorld back then but didn't find one which kept me from picking it up. This might change now, thanks for posting about it again! :)
I believe we did have some kind of post about it at some point.. at least, I'm aware of it's existence and learn most of my gaming stuff from here.

It is a really nice looking game, I hope it makes its way here at some point.

Reminds me a bit of Dwarf Fortress in space.

Dwarf Fortress is indeed one of the major influences

Which is largely why I'm interested in it, I love Dwarf Fortress but half the fun of something like that is building an awesome base, which isn't great in ASCII... and I've yet to see a graphical DF clone that came anywhere near the original in complexity (Gnomoria was a huge disappointment).
But this does look really good.

Does it do multiple z levels like DF or is it only on the surface of the planet?
OP is another victim of the useless GOG forum search.

I found that I have voted for this game, so I use google search to make sure.

The game have been mentioned in GOG forum.

GOG forum is worse and worse, and the promised improvement is never come here.

one plane only. the only thing to think about, as such, is roofing. There is no point having a storage area without roof, for example, as the materials get spoiled. Or indeed a refrigerated area without roof is pointless as it don't stay cold. But it is more of a property of an area than something "physical "

That's maybe not a bad thing, I do always struggle a bit with the 3D thinking required in DF.
This looks excellent, but when the the time comes when I, uh, have enough time for something like this I'll be torn between this and Dwarf Fortress. That everything only occurs on one level is slightly off-putting if I'm honest. Same problem with Cataclysm : Dark Days Ahead, except for basements. Then again, unlike DF I'd expect there to be far less if any performance issues. 200 dwarves on 5x5 area = eish...

One of the things I like about Rimworld is the programmer, Tynan Sylvester. He's very active on the forums and the community.

He and Rock Paper Shotgun have had words:

Nice, hope it hits here if not shall pick it up direct, give it a vote anyway.
The problem with this game is that it can become a bit addictive. I bought it in spring 2016 and it gave me some sleepless nights back then. I believe it was at Alpha 13 then and now it's at Alpha 17. Probably the next alpha will be released till Christmas.

There are tons of mods for it and the community is pretty big. Anyone interested in the game should not wait for discounts because there won't be any soon. Here's the developer's twitter, for anybody interested.
