Today, we bid farewell to the legendary post-apocalyptic 2D classics.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we needed to pull the three classic Fallout games, that is Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics, from sale and remove them from our DRM-free catalog. These classic titles have been with us since day one, that is for over 5 years now, and they were always one of the highlights of the selection of games that we offer. There are very few titles in the history of computer role-playing games, that have had so much impact on the gaming landscape, players' expectations, and even the popular culture. The iconic setting, the memorable quotes, and unparalleled amount of fun and challenge these games provide--it's all burned in the memory of a whole generation of gamers. Probably even more than just one generation. It was an honor to have you here, Fallout. Take good care of yourself out there, try not to mistake a gecko for G.E.C.K. (not even remotely the same thing!), and remember to take your Rad-X pills!

All those who acquired Fallout, Fallout 2, or Fallout Tactics on GOG.com prior to the date of removal (that is before Tuesday, December 31st 2013, at 3:59PM GMT), will still be able to download the games' install files (as well as the bonus content) via the "My Games" section of their user accounts. Gift-codes for these three games acquired in our recent giveaway are no longer valid. However, if you own a gift-code for any or all of them that was purchased outside of the said giveaway, you'll still be able to redeem it in the foreseeable future.

We sincerely apologize for all the inconvenience this situation may have caused you. We invite you to browse through 671 other fantastic titles offered in our DRM-free catalog of the best games in history, and we wish you a Happy New Year of gaming!

Can someone explain how this even happened?

NovaRain: Is there any plan for GOG.com to negotiate a new deal with Bethesda/ZeniMax about selling Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics?

Tsugirai: Those guys will NEVER sell anything DRM free. They actually even limit the availability of their games to eastern european players, because apparently it is a den for pirates.
It is like ZeniMax Media is a very schizophrenic company. They have released free games, they have fairly consistently let Bethesda release mod tools for its games, they allowed id to release the tools for Rage and the source code for Doom 3 BFG Edition(Even very shortly after its retail release: https://github.com/id-Software/DOOM-3-BFG), they allowed Arkane to release the Arx Fatalis source code(http://www.arkane-studios.com/uk/arx_downloads.php).

They allowed Carmack to create browser and iOS ports of Wolf3D and a iOS port of Doom based on user created ports forcing them to release source code for those(due to the GPL: https://github.com/id-Software/wolf3d-browser and https://github.com/id-Software/Wolf3D-iOS and https://github.com/id-Software/DOOM-iOS).

They not only don't go around "foxing" fan based tributes to actually feature on the Bethesda blog.

But then you have their refusal(so far) to release games on GOG, their bad treatment of various development studios they have worked with etc.

It is like they don't know if they want to be the best company in the industry or the worst one.
VOTE FOR THE FALLOUT GAMES !!!

Magnitus: So technically, Bethesda is to blame for pulling the titles (they are still on Steam).
As said on the other thread, Steam still has them listed as published by Interplay. Rights change hands on 1/1/2014.
But no, not any more than 1C Publishing being responsible for losing Perimeter for a month and a half on October 2012.

jorlin: Hey, that's strange, Desura still has all three of them.
They are invite only. You can't buy them.

ZeniMax/Bethesda and GOG could have entered a deal in anticipation of the rights transfer. They have known about it for a quite a while. No reason for negotiations to start now. I trust GOG when they say it was outside their control. Talking to ZeniMax IS in GOG's control so one has to assume they have done that and ZeniMax said no/the negotiations fell through. Hence people blame ZeniMax.

Fair enough, guess we'll see what happens on Steam, though I think Kristian has a point there.

Let's not go overboard. As long as the games don't get removed from my account, they are cool with me (though I still won't buy DRM-laden single-player or LAN based games if they don't release DRM-free).

Hopefully this would lead to GOG and Bethesda inking a new contract. Aside from the classic Fallout games, it could mean that we could have New Vegas and the DOOM series landing here. Here's hoping that Bethesda is merely lazy; not malicious.

I assume talks between GOG and ZeniMax/Bethesda to have started back in 2008, since ZeniMax is one of the big players. Inability to sign a contract doesn't mean GOG has to remove a game, an expired contract means they have to remove one (see Colin McRae 2005, TOCA 3, Perimeter etc). That is what is out of GOG's hands, the deal signed between Interplay and Bethesda. Even if GOG already has a signed contract with Zenimax to be able to start selling the games from January 2nd, they would still have to remove the games until then.

So the "out of GOG's hands" refers to a deal between Interplay and Bethesda, while the ability to sell the Fallouts here again depends on a deal between GOG and Bethesda.
I do wonder if some companies get a kick-back or some such from valve for making them steam only. Or is it now a case that they can pretty much dictate terms to get the games on steam?

Dear Bethesda,

This is why nobody invites you to parties.

Signed,
An angry former customer.

It could be that or that Steam takes a smaller cut from each sale or that they just don't like GOG personally (there are plenty of precedents for partnership decisions in business being made based on a personal like/dislike of some high ups in a company).
