Today, we bid farewell to the legendary post-apocalyptic 2D classics.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we needed to pull the three classic Fallout games, that is Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics, from sale and remove them from our DRM-free catalog. These classic titles have been with us since day one, that is for over 5 years now, and they were always one of the highlights of the selection of games that we offer. There are very few titles in the history of computer role-playing games, that have had so much impact on the gaming landscape, players' expectations, and even the popular culture. The iconic setting, the memorable quotes, and unparalleled amount of fun and challenge these games provide--it's all burned in the memory of a whole generation of gamers. Probably even more than just one generation. It was an honor to have you here, Fallout. Take good care of yourself out there, try not to mistake a gecko for G.E.C.K. (not even remotely the same thing!), and remember to take your Rad-X pills!

All those who acquired Fallout, Fallout 2, or Fallout Tactics on GOG.com prior to the date of removal (that is before Tuesday, December 31st 2013, at 3:59PM GMT), will still be able to download the games' install files (as well as the bonus content) via the "My Games" section of their user accounts. Gift-codes for these three games acquired in our recent giveaway are no longer valid. However, if you own a gift-code for any or all of them that was purchased outside of the said giveaway, you'll still be able to redeem it in the foreseeable future.

We sincerely apologize for all the inconvenience this situation may have caused you. We invite you to browse through 671 other fantastic titles offered in our DRM-free catalog of the best games in history, and we wish you a Happy New Year of gaming!

Grargar: There is something strange going on though... Take a look here. There is a Fallout discount effective for 44 more hours.

nijuu: must have missed that bit.strange they are doing it now.but that would take it past Jan 1st.....
Yeah so what? Beth/Zenimax is kind of Valves bitch if it come to gaming. They do not want to anger the only place their flagship title games get sold (or at least must have been activated in order to use legally).

fallout was the reason I joined gog in the first place... sad to see them go
I'd like to thank GOG for giving these games away before they disappeared. Fallout was the first game I bought on GOG way back in 2008, and it's a pity to see these games go away, but at least most GOG users now have them.

Yup. Same.
"As you may know, Interplay was the original publisher and developer of the Fallout series. They sold the series' rights to Bethesda in 2007, but retained the MMO rights. However, their right to make a Fallout MMO rested on two conditions: that Interplay would secure $30 million in financing for the game and start full-scale development by April 2009. Bethesda filed a lawsuit stating that Interplay failed to fulfill either requirement and that the MMO rights should revert back to them.

Interplay can continue to sell Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics. However, there's a time limit on that. Bethesda will have sole right to market these games starting on January 1st, 2014."

No surprises there then.

I guess we can start the year off with a big "FUCK YOU BETHESDA". I seriously hope they go financially bankrupt, although given the moral bankruptcy of the industry, I wouldn't count on it.
Maybe the future will bring Bethesda games into GOG's catalog and we will have Fallout games once more. Really hope 2014 will bring us more classic games. It's sad to see such iconic games removed from such an iconic service like GOG.
I still got some invalid Fallout gift codes. Any takers?

Or should I send them to Bethesda?

jackster79: I really really dislike when key information like this is only posted in the sub-forums. It should have been posted on the main page at the time of the give-away.
How was GOG supposed to do that? Disabling the gift-codes happened well after the giveaway ended. For more informations look here
Such a shame for these to go, I've only just recently joined GOG when i heard about the free give away for the fallout games, then to my suprise i got beneath a steel sky, ive been wanting to play these titles for ages lol. so a big thanks to GOG! been loving the christmas sales youve been putting up, now with just under 30 games in the library ive got many hours to kill! :D

Still sucks that the politics behind game franchises is what limits its own potential and audience, further more old titles are still pushed into this DRM crapstorm and in the end its the first fans/customers who take the hit from a game becoming successful and being bought by a bigger company :(
It's a good thing i got these games during the Christmas giveaway. Though i never played them before (granted, i did briefly play a demo of Fallout Tactics way back), i'm always eager to try a true classic when the opportunity strikes. It is a shame to see them go, but at least there are still a lot more classics here that make it worth sticking around.

The reason why I do mention this as strange is that the game is still being listed as published by Interplay.

Fenixp: What irks me about this is that I've never seen GOG community shitting at an unrelated company when a game got pulled for whatever reason - except for now. Now Bethesda, who's just not to blame in this particular instance, gets a shitstorm of 'Oh it's all their fault!' - not thinking about the fact that the deal would be off now regardless of who would own the property.
That's probably because you are comparing apples to oranges. In those other cases, I think the game has had to be pulled from all the stores, not just GOG, for reasons like there being some third party license involved (with some sports organization or whatever) that expired. I am unsure why e.g. XIII was pulled from GOG, but I presume it isn't sold in any other stores either, and it was maybe somehow related to the whole XIII license expiring (ie. those books or cartoon that game is based on). So in that sense, those games cease to exist as an item available for sale, anywhere.

Dark Fall games were indeed still sold on e.g. Steam when the GOG version was pulled, but there was a valid reason there, GOG learned there was some disagreement with the game developer, and the publisher who was selling them specifically on GOG (Steam had a different publisher). And the Dark Fall games came back to GOG as soon as those disagreements were solved. And as a matter of fact, I think GOG decided themselves to pull the Dark Fall games until the rights are fully cleared, not so much that they were ordered to pull the games away.

Now, unless the earlier Fallout games disappear also from Steam, your point is not valid. If the games don't come back to GOG soon, then yes, Bethesda is being a dick and has something specifically against GOG. In practice, they are not allowing GOG to sell a few old games that they've been selling for years successfully already, just to spite. And no, this is not the same case as Bethesda e.g. refusing to release Fallout 4 on GOG, as GOG hasn't sold Fallout 4 for a couple of years already (from different publisher).

Gilliatt: Thank you very much GOG for giving them for free before they were removed ! I'm happy to have all 3 of them in my library !

Now I can only hope you'll be able to sign a contract to get the rest of the series in the near future !

Pheace: Don't forget to thank Interplay, they're the ones who allowed GOG to give them away for free, probably to spite Bethesda after they lost the fight over the rights :)
You're right ! Thanks Interplay ! And thanks to you for reminding me !

Fenixp: All right, didn't know about Bethesda trying to sabotage Fallout MMO - could you link some articles, please?

As for the rest of your post... You yourself are saying that Interplay didn't act very morally themselves and I never said Bethesda was a particulary nice company. They most certainly are not. But what you did there was basically "Oh, let's look at all the other shit they pulled" - what happened is still deal between Interplay and GOG running out here, nothing more.

What irks me about this is that I've never seen GOG community shitting at an unrelated company when a game got pulled for whatever reason - except for now. Now Bethesda, who's just not to blame in this particular instance, gets a shitstorm of 'Oh it's all their fault!' - not thinking about the fact that the deal would be off now regardless of who would own the property.

kaileeena: I guess one of the reasons can be that for all of game pulled off before (correct me If I am wrong), they were removed everywhere. This is first time a game is removed from GOG and stays on Steam and rest which showed the ugly face of Bethesda supporting DRM I guess for people.

Just my 2 cents
This is probably going to be downrated to oblivion, but how hard is it to understand that Bethesda has a business relationship with Valve, hence why their games are on Steam. They do not have one with GoG, hence why their games are not on here. It's really as simple as that. Users crying that it's Bethesda's fault that Fallout isn't here anymore is misplaced, it's due to Interplay. Why do you think Beth should allow their products, especially older titles like Fallout, to be sold here? Do you think they owe it to the GoG community for some reason? What relationship to they even have with the GoG community to care?

This idea that Beth is going to lose money by not selling them here is also fallacy. I'm sure they have tons of data that show that a month on Steam is probably worth 6 on almost every other distributor, including GoG.
