During the early 2000's Having a internet connection was somewhat of a costly thing , So i preferred to find the game demos from pc magazines discs instead, Every now and then you would come across a game that was made by one person and it would be awesome to play aka today's indie games existed back then too for example the cult classic dink smallwood that became so popular that it was released as a freeware.
Now i don't know how many others know this but around that time two other shareware games were pretty popular. The shareware version of these games had the full game that you could unlock by paying online and getting a key to unlock it.
1)Legal crime http://www.mobygames.com/game/legal-crime
The first game was called Legal Crime , it was a constructors Mob rule kinda game where you were a mobster and had to rise up in ranks by doing various missions. It was a simple game you would start from your HQ and had to take over buildings and earn protection money. Using those funds you could bribe the cops, army etc to get better mobsters like hitman. The real challenge a rival boss would also be on the same map trying to ruin you over.
The main popularity of the game was the multiplayer , people loved playing the game online. I have no idea what happened but when i got a regular internet connection in 2009 , i checked up on this game and found this website still having all the info but other places indicated a sad end some hacker took over the servers and shut down the game.

You can download the demo from there its still a pretty fun game but sadly cant find the updated versions or the full version of it.
2) Earthlords http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/569248-the-earth-lords
This one is another popular shareware it was a top-down rpg game made by Wayne Stewart. It was simple yet detailed rpg game for its time. The story and mechanics was something that made you play the game till the shareware limits kicked in.
The game began in the traditional D&D style you would have to pick a character class and had to roll the dice to determine the stats. The game began in a city where you wake up with no memory of what happened.
I played the game a lot back in the day and just like legal crime when i got a net connection i tried to look up for this game and could barely find anything about it. Just a mention on some of the game sites and demo download location.
Its a shame that the full version of this game does not exist.
This demo download is all i could find

Both the sharewares still work today its a shame we will never be able to play the full versions of these games.
Has anyone else played these two games ? Are there more lost games like this ?
PS: Be careful when searching for earthlords stuff online the game was so popular in its day that hackers made "crack" files in its name hidden as a virus.
