thomq: I pointed out in
an earlier postthat there is also an
Immortal Edition upgrade that wasn't revealed in the original post. [...]
HypersomniacLive: Wow, no wonder it was not announced, the price is the same as that of the game, to the cent; now I see what mistermumbles meant.
thomq: [...] I'm thinking of the price of the digital extras as being about the cost of the strategy guide, with the rest of the digital extras an attempt to help buffer any disagreement about the strategy guide's value.
HypersomniacLive: Almost 50USD... must be one hell of a strategy guide, given that it's not even an actual, printed book. The upgrade from Base to Legacy, however, doesn't seem to support your point of view. Unless you mean that even if one chooses an edition/upgrade path that doesn't include the strategy guide, they still pay for it; sounds even worse to me.
What I mean by the buffer is the Immortal Edition upgrade's cost of $45 dollars represents the strategy guide and all the digital extras, so that implies the strategy guide is valued at less than $45 because the digital extras share some of that value. Establishing a middle tier, the Legacy Edition, at $20 gives the impression that the difference for the Immortal Edition is only $25 more. Because the Legacy Edition has only some of the digital extras other than the strategy guide, that implies the strategy guide in the Immortal Edition is not that full value of $25 because there are still some other digital extras not in the Legacy Edition sharing that value. Yet, the strategy guide is unavailable unless the full $45 package is bought.
That's what I mean by buffering the price: they add extra content (buffer) giving the impression it's not the guide that costs $45, as well as adding another tier (another buffer) to emphasize the guide isn't even half of the $45,
even though the guide can't be gotten without spending $45. (I just couldn't think of another word besides "buffer".)
That's not to say the other content is not worth $20+; perhaps the novellas and artwork are appropriately valued at that. For myself, I'm readily valuing the functional part (that is, the strategy guide) of the whole set, and considering everything else as simply memorabilia. Though, I will grant the five novellas are potentially a boon for fleshing out the storyline (a worthy value for a cherished game, if it becomes that). Keep in mind, I don't have any of this, not even the game, so I'm comparing what I think was intended (marketing) with what I actually value of what is provided.
HypersomniacLive: EDIT: And I just noticed that the Base Edition does not include the manual. Seriously, inXile? For almost 50USD, not even the manual?
As I noted in my previous post I linked, the manual was initially listed for the base game during the pre-order promotion, then the statement removed after it launched. And, that the Legacy Edition is ambiguously listed as
having and
not having avatars. So maybe the lack of a manual for the base game is inaccurate? It seems to me the pages still need tidying up, especially the base game page as (at this moment in time) it doesn't have any links to the digital extras upgrades, but only to the full versions of base + extras.
