Eurogamer considers the game "Essential" saying: "The great joy of Failbetter's latest is once again the ghoulish inventiveness of the writing and setting".

"The sharpest writing around, wrapped inside a surprising adventure that’s tough but rarely unfair. Failbetter’s finest hour" - 90/100 PC Gamer

RockPaperShotgun deems it one of its "Bestest Bests" praising all the small but meaningful ways in which this sequel to Sunless Sea improves upon the formula.
Couldn't get into their web based game or sunless seas, the level/quantity of english is just too high to enjoy. I warn my fellow non english born gamers.

But for those who enjoy that, have fun!

As a non-english born guy that's one of the reasons why I enjoyed both Fallen London and Sunless Sea; a great way for improving your enligh while playing. Just have a dictionary opened on the second monitor.
I like how the gamepage tells you to check out their other game "Sunless Skies" and links to itself.

That's a great way to polish language skills, I'll have to look for oppertunities for that in the ones I'm studying :)
So hypothetically, what are the chances I can just relax and set up a quaint railway?
Hooray! Rockpapershotgun have just reviewed it and given it their "Bestest Bests" award:

I may have been inexact in my opinion.

My level of english is decent, it's just that such high level of english, in a continuous way, was too much to enjoy in a videogame. Sunless Seas has been given away so I could try again but the world isn't that attractive to me, guess it plays too.
low rated
I can't wait to see:
Release: Dungeon Master
Will need to get this at some point... after I finish Sunless Seas.
I guess I'll try Sunless Sea again, though I'm having trouble.

Think of it as more of a novellas collection rather than your usual video game, it might help getting into it ;)

1. Turn off permadeath (it adds nothing, besides frustration)
2. Explore instead of taking the usual routes
3. Turn on cheat engine and bid three speedhack settings; 1x as default/fighting one, 2x as normal for the majority of the game, 3x for routes you've already explored

You can ignore point three if you have a lot of time, but as someone who sank over 200 hours in Sunless Sea, the "spend 20 minutes to get this very tiny bit of lore and repeat infinitely" gimmick is getting annoyed after first ~50hours. Sunless Sea is VERY grindy for nothing other than "so far we made browser game in which grinding is mandatory to keep players". It's much, much better handled in Skies, thankfully.

I'll skip #3 because sadly enough, I have the time, but I appreciate the other two. Thank you. :D
Pro-tip for Sunless Sea: get the Zubmariner expansion! It massively reduces the grind, massively reduces the fuel/terror micromanagement, and massively increases the opportunities to get money and resources.
