The marvels of evolution.

SPORE™, an organic playground of custom-made creations, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 60% launch discount.

At what stage does a living organism start taking its shape, absorbing influences from its environment, its parents, or its peers? For these SPORE™s it happens during their very conception when you get to decide their characteristics and traits, then see them grow from Cells, to Creatures, to an entire Tribe, to a glorious Civilization, and eventually a Space-faring people. Apart from your virtual offspring themselves, you will also get to design their vehicles and buildings, as well as determine all aspects of their eventful lives. And eventful they will be, because when you start exploring the universe, other species might try to befriend or fight your guys for intergalactic supremacy. It's a wonderful journey that begins with the versatile creation tool, but the decisions you make along the way will determine how, where, or even when it will end.

Create your own unique species and spread their influence across the galaxy with SPORE™, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The 60% discount will last until September 29, 12:59 PM UTC.

markrichardb: which were used up if you so much as sneezed on your graphic's card
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not entirely certain that that's how graphics cards are intended to be used. Personally, I would use a paper towel, or even a handkerchief instead.
Am I seeing things correctly? Is the game full price here cheaper than the game full price on Origin?

Matruchus: Its a god game like the upcoming Universim just different aspect. In Spore you evolve your people from cells, to beings, create their body parts and put them together and help them conquer your planet and then go in to space and do stuff there :)

Vythonaut: Oh, so it's basically Civilization & Alpha Centauri on a molecule scale, with a touch of Darwin and a twist! :P
Thanks for the info, it sounds quite intriguing. I'll watch some gameplay videos to see how the game works right away.
Yes, do watch gameplay. It's not nearly as interesting as it sounds. You basically get to design a creature (shape the body and pick from a choice of arms, legs, mouths and eyes) when your basic single-cell organism have grown enough to get out of the sea, then you create buildings and a space ship in a similar manner as you progress to different ages.
Nice relese, even if ideally I'd like to play an improved Spore 2, more than this (sadly) failed attempt.

Btw, does anyone remember Flow?

No amount of modding has ever fixed Spores problems.

Ixamyakxim: Thanks for this. Doesn't sound too bad (and strangely enough I always thought the game was mostly RTS). I might check out your LP to get a better idea of what it's all about.
not a problem. i appreciate you checking out my channel/that lp and reading the review. hope it's helpful.

to be fair:
those creature/building builders are AMAZING and a bit of a technical marvel all of their own.

one of my friends has a pair of kids aged 8 and 5 and as a result of the way the creature creator [and other tools in that suite] are programmed, he can always build something that "works." [for the most part.]

but yeah. it's a pity the game was as shallow as all that. :(

Nice to see this here, never played the add-on.
Always wanted to try it, never wanted to deal with the DRM elsewhere. Thanks GOG for bringing it, and thank you EA for allowing it. Now you both can have my money. :)

Ixamyakxim: Okay I have to ask what the deal is with this game.

I remember the idea of it sounded very compelling on release, plus it had Will Wright behind it. Then it released and *boom* - what was so "bad" about it? I completely missed what happened post-release.

Because the game actually does look really interesting.

markrichardb: Spore was legendary for its DRM. It is the anti-life equation, the black grail, the libris mortis - an unholy artefact for the forces of evil. Not only did the single-player portion require an Internet connection, but it also had limited activations (3, I think?) which were used up if you so much as sneezed on your graphic's card. If customers used up their activations and still wanted to be able to play the game they paid for, they had to run the gauntlet that was EA's customer support which was only available in America. Don't get me started on the horror stories that came out of that.

On the gameplay side, there just wasn't anywhere near as much depth to Spore as promised. Many of the features seemed to have been scaled back. Despite all that, the Spore presentation by Robin Williams still cheers me up. Lovely guy.
Ya, it was 3 installs and that was it. Considering I usually reformatted my computer every few months to keep things running smoothly or to allow for hardware upgrades, I had to completely skip the game.

I had a lot of friends who were excited about it that gave up when they learned about the DRM too, it was really sad.

Austrobogulator: Now do Darkspore.
*sniffles*

Don't tease like that :(
I for one welcome our new EA overlords. I’d like to remind them that as a trusted long time forum dweller I can be helpful rounding up naive steam-users to toil in in their underground Origin caves.

I'm actually quite happy to see more EA stuff in here, even if the games themselves don't attract me that much.

It's a matter of principle.
NO-DRM principles.
