Be kind, rewind

<span class="bold">Shadwen</span>, a thrilling exercise in silent killing within a bleak medieval environment, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and a 15% launch discount.

Time stands still as Shadwen lurks behind a dark corner, wishing that the little girl cowering beside her didn't have to witness the brutal scene that is about to unfold. But maybe she doesn't. Perhaps there is another way to get past these guards, climb on that scaffold, and continue on her mission to assassinate the king. Before you execute any action, time stands still, allowing you to change plans on the spot and even rewind failed attempts. Killing might not be necessary, as long as Shadwen manages to stay hidden or use distractions, thus sparing young Lily the horrible sight of this muffled violent dance.

Put on your soft leather gloves, don your darkness-colored robes, and keep your murders quiet as you become <span class="bold">Shadwen</span>, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 15% discount will last until May 24, 1:59 PM UTC.

apehater: games similar to shadwen?
@apehater have you checked out Thief: Deadly Shadows https://www.gog.com/game/thief_3
It's probably my favorite stealth game of all time and the only Thief game that offers a third person perspective.

There's also Styx: Master of Shadows http://www.styx-thegame.com/
It too is played from a third person perspective.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any other third person stealth games. Most of them are first person (which makes me very sick).

As for Shadwen, even without the Editor, I don't regret buying it. It's the most enjoyable game I've played this year. It's really very fun.

I thought Lily would annoy me, but she's really not an issue. She never gets in the way or alerts the guards, so I find myself ignoring her for the most part.

There is one good thing about Lily, I never get lost! Lily knows the way, so I often let her lead (she also shows me where all the good hiding spots are).

There are really only two things that annoy me about the game: Swinging with the grappling hook. I hate jumping puzzles! But once I got past the first puzzle in the prologue, I've never had to do it again.

And 'the time moves only when the character moves' mechanic. Luckily there's a 'Time Toggle' feature in Settings-Binds. You just set a key for it and you can toggle between real-time and pause time modes at will, which is great. Cause I was getting sick of holding down the Q key.

So if you were to ask me if I'd recommend the game, the answer would be yes, absolutely!

MikeMaximus: From what I've read, AMD has no intentions of adding support for anything older than the Sea Island series for their new AMDGPU driver.

But the radeonsi driver is progressing nicely, the development version is up to OpenGL 4.3, r600 is still stuck at 4.1.
avatar
Phaedrus567: True, and eventually I will upgrade, but it won't be for another year at the minimum.

The mesamatrix makes it look like the r600 should support up to 4.1, and I seem to have the latest stable of both xorg (7.7) and mesa (11.2.2) .... but Shadwen won't run. No error, not even a black to desktop screen. Just does nothing.

When I run glxinfo | grep -i OpenGL it returns "OpenGL core profile version string: 3.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 11.2.2" as one of the results.
r600g supports GL4.1
your gfx card doesn't (no native fp64 support)

but from what I read that feature is rarely used, so that isn't really a problem in practice. Except when some app just checks the GL version number and not the extension it actually requires :p

i would definitly try that version override that shmerl linked to.

If you have the means, check out the Tenchu series, my favorite 3d-person stealth games -

I was doing the same thing at first. I.e. I toggled time freezing off, because it felt odd. But then jumping with the grappling hook became really messy and I felt I was struggling to do it right. But when I turned time freezing on, that's when it clicked together. The game is designed to use the grappling hook in combination with time freezing. Otherwise you simply can't make complex moves in real time using such controls.

I.e. for example you throw a hook and pull up to some ledge. Then you let the hook go and time freezes while you are in mid air. Then aim at some other spot, and only then throw the hook and swing there.

I still switch time freezing off in some other areas, but for jumps it's perfect.

shmerl: Those interested in the editor to be released on GOG, please politely comment in this thread.
Thank you! I will bookmark this one for later.

I noticed this too plus you can get some nice screenshots while in mid air.

Hitman series (here on gog there are Hitman 1-2-3) are stealth third person games. I think hitman 2 is the best stealth ever made (great story ad gameplay).

Hitman 1 is really difficult (I mean really difficult!!!) and the story is not that great, also the gameplay is not 100% stealth (there are levels where you need to kill many people). If you want you can skip it and play Hitman 3 to get a background story (in Hitman 3 most of the missions are remake from hitman 1), but I suggest you to play hitman 1 because it is still a good game.

EDIT.
I ended Shadwen achivements:

(Platino is italian for Platinum and in video games it means that you have completed 100%)
the equivalent in the english version is "Both sides now"

Wow, there are a lot of posts. Thanks everyone for your interest!

Below are some quotes and specific replies to them. If you have any other questions, please email to us at Support[at]Frozenbyte[dot]com to make sure we see your message!

However firstly I'll tackle the most popular topic, which is the level editor:

Unfortunately we currently can't add the level editor to GOG. Cutting of its Steam features isn't as simple as it sounds. We'll still look into this, but this is the current situation. Shadwen's editor is really close to the ones we published to Trine and Trine 2 in 2014, so making it separate from Steam would need a completely new build of it.

I'm really sorry for the inconvenience, but as our defense there is no mention about the level editor in the game's description and we have written about it to our blog, so we really tried to bring this information forth.

Thank you all for your understanding!

TLDR; Sorry! We are checking if we could do something with the Editor, but no promises. Below are some other replies.

amok: Adding custom maps with a built in editor is not called modding.... Modding is short for modification or modify, this is clearly not the case.
We refer the usage of our editor as modding, because you can really change a lot with it. For example by editing scripts. Also when you add the level, it's usually there to replace the normal maps. Mod just stands for modification, so I think it's quite close. :)

zeroxxx: Frozenbyte, why is Shadwen consuming so much proc power when it's minimized/in background?

Also Shadwen doesn't properly recognize and utilize discrete graphic card when it's being played on dual GPU laptop.
I believe that the game is actually left running to the background, so that's why it still uses your CPU a lot. It's just as if you left the game on and you can rewind when you open it again. So, if your computer slows down a lot – please finish the level you're playing and exit the game properly!

Unfortunately I don't know why the graphics cards is not properly recognized, but please note that you can edit this from your graphics card's settings. I'll also forward this to our QA team so they can look into it.

Cheers!

Mnemon: Hm. Played Demo for a bit now - is it possible to save progress somewhere through the level in the full version? Much as I like games I also like to be able to shut them down at whatever point I choose to and attend to other things :).
Unfortunately no, there is no save option, but your progress is automatically saved at the end of each level. Also sometimes there are checkpoints in the middle of the level.

Lemon_Curry: I also wonder why the system requirements state the following:
Please Note: 64 bit operating system required to play! .

Plenty of other sources claim it's only required for playing the game on the highest graphical settings.
We unfortunately only have the 64bit version of the game on GOG. So, the requirement isn't wrong.

avatar
Phaedrus567: So, as best I can tell, my open source drivers don't support the minimum openGL4.1 just yet
Yes, unfortunately most open source drivers don't support it which is why we don't recommend using them.
I didn't know that Trine 1 & 2 were missing an editor too : (

Why?
Do you offer the 32 bit version on Steam?

This makes the missing feature sound even worse. :(

At some point it was only possible to add one executable to GOG, and we decided to go with the 64 bit version because it generally runs better. I'm not sure what's the situation now, but this is why it's missing. And yes, Steam has them both.

Sorry! :( We are really looking into this. You can also email us if you'd be interested in trying the Steam version.

Weird, it should be possible to do multiple now at least, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines did so for example.
It does make sense to go with the 64 bit version if you can only offer one of them.
I'm curious, is there some a console? I would like to disable Lily's A.I that makes her move when no guard is looking and actually get caught if a guard sees her (bug on my side?) so you have to be careful where you send her but it would add an interactive dimension to the game that I miss.

That was a bit annoying also in the demo.
It would have made more sense to signal her to move, instead (isn't the kid a bit too reckless\fearless?).
Anyway, that weird mechanic added more thrill to the game, because you always needed to check (stop) her.
