Be kind, rewind

Shadwen, a thrilling exercise in silent killing within a bleak medieval environment, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and a 15% launch discount.

Time stands still as Shadwen lurks behind a dark corner, wishing that the little girl cowering beside her didn't have to witness the brutal scene that is about to unfold. But maybe she doesn't. Perhaps there is another way to get past these guards, climb on that scaffold, and continue on her mission to assassinate the king. Before you execute any action, time stands still, allowing you to change plans on the spot and even rewind failed attempts. Killing might not be necessary, as long as Shadwen manages to stay hidden or use distractions, thus sparing young Lily the horrible sight of this muffled violent dance.

Put on your soft leather gloves, don your darkness-colored robes, and keep your murders quiet as you become Shadwen, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 15% discount will last until May 24, 1:59 PM UTC.

Kudos for making us all aware of the problem (+1)!

omega64: GOG chose to sell it with that feature missing.
Indeed... good grief!

adamhm: (This also forms a negative feedback loop of users not buying games here because of developers not providing much support for releases here, resulting in developers not putting much effort into supporting releases here due to lack of users buying here...)
I fully agree with you mate. Apropos of negative loops, Frozenbyte themselves created this particular one:

[KaiFB:]... there’s no plans for a non-Steam version unfortunately.

However,if it becomes really popular we could consider it, but no promises yet :)

So they determine its popularity, and thus future potential for inclusion, by way of exclusion. To me this all sounds like an awfully convenient way of simply maintaining the status quo.

mkess: I stopped reading at "escorting a little girl"
avatar
shmerl: You actually can play as that girl, so she isn't just AI controlled.
I'm puzzled as to why they haven't elaborated on that in this last part of the description:
TWO CHARACTERS - Embrace the darkness with Shadwen and her abilities to protect Lily and create a safe passage for her.

I also wonder why the system requirements state the following:
Please Note: 64 bit operating system required to play! .

Plenty of other sources claim it's only required for playing the game on the highest graphical settings.

Phaedrus567: So many options for cross product and OS support, and devs keep picking the ones that deny user choice, and increase the chance at a monopoly. <sigh>
Happens everywhere though. See how ubiquitous Facebook / Google scripts are around the web.

Mnemon: Hm. Played Demo for a bit now - is it possible to save progress somewhere through the level in the full version? Much as I like games I also like to be able to shut them down at whatever point I choose to and attend to other things :).
You can't manually save, there are checkpoints which according to "Choose Chapter" (like loading) you can load a specific checkpoint so you don't have to replay an entire mission.

As for lack of manual save when you are playing, it's not an issue due to the mechanic Rewind time.

A correction - you can play as Lily in the intro. Later it seems you don't have direct control over her actions, except guiding her (i.e. pressing guide button makes her move towards that place). At least that's what's going on in the first level, I didn't get far yet.

ElizabethOzborn: Does anybody know if the GOG version of Shadwen comes with the 'Level Editor'?

The game is supposed to be mod friendly and allow you to create your own levels and mods. But from what I've read, it looks like the 'Level Editor' is only available with the Steam version of the game.

If this is true, then it really stinks! Cause I hate Steam and I'll never use it!
Someone - not me - posed that question on Frozenbyte's forums. Response from EllaFB, one of their developers:
Unfortunately the Editor is only available through Steam. This is because sharing the content is linked with the Steam Workshop feature. The editor is also only available for Windows.

If you're really interested in using our editor, you could sent us an email and we could see if there is anything we could do about this. You can sent the email to support[at]frozenbyte[dot]com, if you decide to email us, could you link this thread to your email.

Sorry for the inconvenience, I hope you can still enjoy the game!

That's an OK requirement in my opinion. x86 desktop / laptop hardware is 64-bit capable for many years already.

I know about the rewind. But - at least that demo level is quite large (read: time intensive). So if I quit mid way through a level I'll lose whatever progress made when restarting. Checkpoints do help a little though if they are frequent enough :).

Sure but they make it sound like you can't play the game on a 32-bit operating system.
Regarding the level editor, I will say this in defense of GOG: The level editor being Steam-exclusive wasn't announced until after GOG had promoted the game with the demo. That being the case, GOG probably felt that it was too late to cancel their release of the game by the time they found out that their version would be inferior to what's on Steam. Of course, that's assuming that GOG actually does have a problem with this.

At least in case of the Linux version they only provide 64-bit binary. And that surely requires a 64-bit OS. I didn't check others.

You aren't wrong, I'm just frustrated that there isn't at least a little more push from users and devs to limit that. It seems like our passive obligation (at the minimum), and everyones best interest (except the monopoly company).

I digress, I'm just lamenting the situation.
I ended my first pacifist run without killing the king...
After that to unlock an achivements I killed some guards on the last level and I have spared the king...
...

After that: there is no way to come back to "clean" Lily, you need to replay all the game into an other save to restore Lily original personality!! I was really lucky (because to finish the achivements now I just need to kill)!

Anyway, if you start with a kill all (or kill some) run you cannot finish erese Lily's memory, so it is impossible to finish the achivements.... it's insane.
Even if you select the first/second level once you have killed a guards Lily will remember the "future" kill... and there is no way to rewind after you have finish a level.

So if you are playing this game be really carefull, and if you want to complete the achivements into one save, just start with a pacifist run.

Surely, GOG must have known (or at the very least anticipated) it would be missing from the game as it seems Frozenbyte have made no attempt at providing Steam-free level editors with their previous titles.

Ah, that would certainly explain it (but then it ought to be clarified in the requirements section*).

*The same goes for Trine 3.

Unbelievable. Achievements are the only difference, not even a different cutscene that will depict how Lily reacted? Damn gamifications..

I didn't know it had been an issue with Frozenbyte's previous games. In that case, it seems that GOG has no good excuse here.
