In the press:
"This isn't an RTS with the combat removed - it's Wall Street on a new frontier."
88/100 - PC Gamer
"It is fast-paced economic warfare with some clever capitalistic mind games to play with."
8/10 - IGN

Ricky_Bobby: Real Mars Map - more than 30 (!) new skirmish maps based on actual Mars maps
Ceres Initiative - a whole new location with new gameplay items
Patron and the Patriot - two new characters and lots of new campaign stuff
From those, Patron and the Patriot seems to the be most meaty one, for single player. That is, if one is to choose just one of the DLC.

Vythonaut: Because marketing happened! After all, "Free DLC" sounds nice, isn't it? ;)
avatar
Lemon_Curry: I know but I simply fail to see how one single free DLC of an almanac could be beneficial to marketing. Surely, including it with the main game would provide more of an incentive for potential customers to buy that product.
There are a lot of stuff happening behind a "Free!" tag. If you feel like reading, check out this article: http://www.neurosciencemarketing.com/blog/articles/the-power-of-free.htm Of course, you can also do your own research about the power of freebies.

Thanks but I'm well aware of all that. I'm just questioning this particular instance of freebie marketing.

By the way, GOG didn't even mention the free almanac DLC in the news post.

Maybe once it's like 95% off :D For now, I'll stick to the Star Trek adventure games (could we finally get A Final Unity here please?)
Ok bought the game plus DLC (sans the kit). Lets see how this goes as i was looking forward to this game :)
Looks like this game still had too few DLCs that they had to add the almanac as a free DLC. :P

Breja: I want to go to SPAAAAAACE to discover new life and new civilisations and encounter weird, awesome stuff. Freaky aliens, time anomalies, ancient ruins build by sentient british grasshoppers, planets made of glass, sofas that can read, stars that emit cold.
Well, you can go there for mining, also, or finding out about devious ways of a mining company. Offworld Trading Company sort of bring back vibes from Outland (1981), starring Sean Connery.

You can be transporting ore also, like in the 1979 classic.

The thing is, finding corporations out there is not uncommon in science fiction. Just different flavours.
This game seems really nice. RTS - combat seems to be perfect match for me. Will have to check it out.

There is quite a lot of combat in this game. You just use market forces & industrial sabotage instead of tanks and flanking manouvers. Just because there is no blood spilled does not mean the conflict is any less bloody;)

Niggles: Depends how much *content* feels like its been cut out of the *original* game i guess. I am wondering how much the DLC adds to the overall experience?.

Having said that, which of the DLC is actually worthwhile?
avatar
Matruchus: The Real Mars pack definitely which adds 30 maps to play on. And Ceres. Everything else is cosmetics.
I recall reading in a review that skirmish/multiplayer maps in the base game are randomly generated based on a selected map type. Are they not (anymore)?

Well the dlc deliver actual mars landscape. Here the description: This map pack adds over 30 new maps to Skirmish and Multiplayer games. Designed by a planetary geologist, these maps model the actual Martian surface in each of the red planet’s regions and will add plenty of depth to your Offworld experience.

I was on the fence about this game for afew days, wich is a warning sign for me, i even considered posting on the trade thread about the freebie copy of the game vs some freebies i had from the last sale, but after watching some campaign vídeos i think ill skip it for now. Matches seem rather short, and the campaign looks like a chain of short matches in a row.
Adding the dlc to get more "meat" out of the game ramps up the price higher than im willing to pay for it. Might be some disapointment for not seeing IG 2 released yet too.

So the base game (still) has random maps for skirmish/multiplayer and the "Real Mars" DLC has nothing else to offer besides 30+ premade maps (no new terrains, map generator options, etc.)?

BoBFiSh: I ended up getting this elsewhere a long while back, and I've not regretted it at all. I play a lot of it multiplayer with friends and family and it plays well, games don't take too long and it has a decent amount of options to level the playing field somewhat.

As to the DLC, there's a lot there but really I've found that just the Ceres addon is enough at the moment. Although I own the majority of it because it was drip fed since launch and never felt like it was forcing me to get it.

Worth a go if you want a nice alternative real time strategy and I'm glad it finally made it here.
avatar
Vythonaut: Nice release! It looks very nice and the launch discount is sweet (not to mention the free extra copy --thanks!). I'm wishlisting it for now until I get back home and make my homework (aka read reviews/watch a couple videos) since it looks like a complex game and in such games, the gameplay/mechanics must be excellent to really grab my attention. I hope the AI is good enough since I don't really care about the multiplayer.

ps. although I'm not big on DLCs, I find OTC's ones particularly interesting, especially Ceres Initiative.
avatar
BoBFiSh: The style of game does seem to lend the AI a certain vicious edge, from my experience with it. So it should present a good challenge and there is a single player campaign that offers different challenges and scenarios to work around.
I just got this game and all I see is an option for ranked. How do you make lobbies for custom games?
