guppy44: I'm wondering the same. I recall playing the original Dawn of War when it first released and loved it, and the base game of Space Marine for Playstation 3, but that's the extent of my experience. They were both enjoyable but I honestly have no idea what's going on story wise.

That said, this looks like a very nice release. :)

muttly13: Warhammer and Warhammer 40k are essentially the same lore-wise. I know someone will argue, but usually 40k is refereed to simply as "Elves in Space" or whichever race you prefer. Bottom line, you need know nothing about any prior lore to immerse yourself in any of the offshoots. It is so expansive to begin with that just about anything fits. For example, Caiphas Caine story's are exceedingly different in tone and setting from Eisenhorn novels yet they are told from the same lore perspective.

But to the original question, no difficulty at all. Follows the same basic fantasy principles established by Tolkien and others... If you are green or furry or have extra limbs, bad. Otherwise, good in a tough love sense.
Thank you for the reply. I thoroughly enjoyed the two games I have played despite having no other knowledge of the universe, so I'm happy to see that's the case with most/all of these games. Not that I don't want to learn more about the lore and story, but sometimes if it's "required" and there are already 20+ games out there it can seem too daunting to want to jump in. I'll be picking this one up. The reviews are nice and the game looks rather fun! Thank you again! :D

Having never played this game I cant speak to it, but if you are looking for real immersion in WH40K, check out Chaos Gate. Tremendous and right in line with the bulk of lore for WH40K. Overly evil guy against the rigidly righteous.

BKGaming: This game looks interesting... though I know nothing about the Warhammer universe. Wonder how difficult it is to figure the lore and such in game.
If you can reply, its not that hard right now. Warhammer Fantasy has a very extensive wikia covering alot right now:

I suggest you learn each faction.

Has anyone played this yet? I have just been playing it for an hour or so, feels like its totally un-finished. Its supposed to be out of InDev, however the character controller is terrible, basic move forward/back run sometimes takes effect. No real other movements like jump roll etc. Graphics mess up a fair bit, camera goes odd, if your aiming cannons and then fire the red arrow goes but your still locked into that firing mode. Have also been fighint some ships, got near doc and eneded up in town in combat, then disappeared into the sea. Ship combat is a mix of pretty good cannon battles to just awful beast attacks. Really all feels clunky and half done. Quite disappointing.
As an example, and maybe not really fair, finished playing Risen 3 recently, which also has most of the components of this, but check out the character controller there, feels lively, moves about, totally the opposite of here.

So noone has played this game, or does everyone think its fine?

Me, I am thinking this reaffirms my belief in not buying InDev or day 1 release games. Wasted £20.
Played it for 5 hours. Gameplay loop is addicting, atmosphere's amazing, ship combat's great, and the options are just getting started (hired my first wizard) and the world is just getting bigger (discovered about 2 areas of i think 30 yet).
Sure, if you really wanna hammer on the melee (which is more of an afterthought) you can. But I even find melee as well done as in assassins creed where you'll roll around the whole time anyways, where in this you have musket (can buy different muskets or swords in town), fire musket, and then switch to sword. You can upgrade your ship with grape shot, chain shot, fire shot, all kinds of hulls, etc. I recently played "Pirates!" and there the world appeared not bigger than in this game. Plus the things you can do here, I enjoy them more than dancing with some dauther, because I can for example, deny a lot of missions in town when I don't feel like it and don't have to worry about factions so much, it only goes up. I wanna say this is much more free roam as in you don't have to care about anything. Plus it has sea creatures :-)
It's a fun game. If you are a warhammer fantasy fan i strongly recommend it as it lets you explore that world from a fresh new angle. I give it an 8 out of 10. None warhammer fans will probably still find it fun, but it perhaps wont quite have the same appeal. For them it would be more of a 7 out of 10.
