GALAK-Z an advanced, open-world space shooter, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Fast, brutal, and responsive. What else could you possibly ask of an action-packed, open-world, physics-driven, bullet-hellish, space dogfighting game?
GALAK-Z harkens back to the days of 2D space shooters, but puts every possible modern twist and improvement on the formula. You take the helm of a cutting-edge, sublimely-controllable spacecraft - it's you vs. the universe - you're outgunned, but with a bit of practice you'll also be unmatched.
You also may just get the chance to transform into a hulking, laser-sword mech.

Dominate the wide wide space in GALAK-Z available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 20% launch discount will last for two weeks, until November 13, 3:59 PM GMT.

In the press:
“There are a thousand little points of tension beyond the "die and restart" loop, and that's what helps GALAK-Z stand comfortably among the best roguelikes ever created.” -- Polygon

“The amount of love and effort that went into crafting GALAK-Z is plainly evident...17-Bit has produced nothing short of a masterpiece.” -- Hardcore Gamer

“GALAK-Z's controls are smartly designed and responsive, which is crucial in a game like this. What really pushes it to the next level is the tremendous amount of detail put into the enemy design and the combat. It has a steep learning curve, but mastering it is an extremely rewarding experience.” --US Gamer
I'm torn.

On the one hand the gameplay looks really nice and a lot of fun. Rogue-like features, but the permadeath is optional (nice). The production values look fantastic. It's cross-platform (Win/OSX/Linux). The feature list sounds excellent. The review comments they've quoted are admirable.

On the other hand, the theme looks like lots of things that I hate all rolled into one. (Nevertheless, at one point a giant robot appears to grab an enemy ship and throw it into an asteroid, and I can only concede that that was kinda cool...)

At minimum I'm wishlisting this.

Watch the trailer if you haven't done so already. The devs have clearly put a ton of work into the game. I'm also particularly intrigued that they have (in the trailer) a distinct credit for the game's A.I. -- at minimum, that aspect of the game is clearly far from an afterthought.

Oh, if I had known it was going to come onto here I would've bought it here :(

It's a cool game though, very challenging

Heard a lot about it on various podcasts but looking at it now, it doesn't seem like my type of game genre. However, I'll keep this in mind. I've already heard about it so much and it does sound fun. Maybe it'll grow on me or something.
I am torn. On one hand it seems like a bullet hell that I suck in.

On the other hand I see mecha transformation and melee combat so it seems like Astrabreed.
Ok, seeing non GOG game play video
able to lure enemies of different fraction to fight each other while you back stab them,
able to grab objects and ram them against your enemy,
able to block,
regenerating shields,
won't rush enemies at you if you don't move to the next area so you have breathing space.

I am sold.
WISHLISTED!
I'll probably pick this up later today. Looks like a lot of fun, and I enjoy the Saturday-morning-cartoon-esque style.

I should note - the luring stuff rarely ever works. You'll still be their prime target.
Also, throwing objects isn't very useful - does next to no damage unless you're in a lava asteroid.

CharlesGrey: What's with all the negative comments? I'm not a huge fan of the Space genre myself, but this looks like a fun and well polished game.
Do yourself a favor and just stop reading reviews and comments on anything.

It's impossible to tell these days if a review or comment is written by an adult, 9 year old, a troll, or a review bomber looking to promote some ideal of gaming politics.

Just check out Youtube for Let's Plays or other such things and see if the game appeals to you. A Let's Play convinced me to buy this game, and I'm quite happy with the purchase.

Cannot agree more. I picked up the game and I absolutely love it. If you base your purchases on the reviews and comments you will miss out on many great games.

Yeah, I find it's rarely good to rely on a single source of information, and that's not limited to video game purchases either. Usually the screenshots and game description are enough to give me some idea whether I would a enjoy a game, but if not there's always user reviews or actual gameplay videos. And I don't care too much what the popular opinion about a game is -- On several occasions in the past I've really enjoyed certain games, despite everyone else claiming they're complete trash.
