Amazing release, this is the best present for the new year. I too hope to see the other Legend games following up. I've been waiting for this for years.

This is a very nice surprise, a classic release on all levels, pricing included.

Legend Entertainment have a number of titles that'd be nice to see released again.

I am definitely hopeful they will get Companions of Xanth as well!

Oh yes! Definitely! That was a great game.

The thing I remember most about Companions of Xanth was that I got it for free.

It was included on one of those demo-CDs (remember those?) that came with some British game-magazine. It was *supposed* to be just a demo, but they put the whole game on the disc by accident. So I got to play the whole game without paying a cent.

The gameplay was better than I expected it to be, although even in 1993 the Xanth setting was pretty much played out (that it's still going 25 years later seems a strong indication that some diabolic deal had been signed by the author). It's characters were awful (Jennie Elf and Com-pew-ter?). Still, while its puzzles were fairly simple and its linearity meant there wasn't much room for replayability, it was an okay romp while it lasted. It helped that it was so easy; had it been a harder game I probably wouldn't have finished it just because it didn't have much else to keep me interested. Still, like Death Gate it wasn't a terrible game and it had very nice graphics and full speech.

Though I expect that we'll see the Spellcasting and Superhero League before Xanth (or Gateway/Callahan/Shannara) though, simply because the former games have simpler licensing.

This is hilarious, what was the name of the magazine? I suppose they found out about it sooner or later, how did they react?

It was PC Review (issue 33, July 1994). I still have the CD-ROM (hey, free copy of Xanth, I'm not giving that up!).

I do't remember if the error was ever brought up in the magazine. I'm sure /somebody/ must have noticed at some point but what the fallout from this error was I have no idea. Likely it was Legend's fault more than the magaziine; the developer probably sent the wrong archive and PC Review just dropped it onto the CD-master. It definitely was supposed to be a demo as it says as much on the CD itself.

I imagine they just hushed the whole thing up, hoped the magazine's circulation was small enough and that most people wouldn't play the demo (or at least wouldn't play to the end).

Not me, though. I finished the game and the memory of it still brings a smile to my face.

Weirdly enough, I had the exact same experience, though I can't say for sure if that was the Magazine (father was travelling abroad quite a bit, he did bring back a number of PC magazines). So either it happened more than once, or two strangers from two different countries half way around the globe managed to have the same magazine issue from a third country.
Interesting either way.

Deathgate is incredibly well done game with nice graphics (never played it before). I do hope we'll see Companions of Xanth and Spellcasting series here one day.
