The third generation of the insanely extensive RPG is here.

Avernum: Escape From The Pit, a vastly enhanced modern remake of one of the biggest and longest-running hard-core isometric RPG worlds that came to being with Exile in 1995, is available 50% off until Monday, for Windows and Mac on GOG.com.

Avernum: Escape From The Pit tells an epic story of a huge underground prison colony - place of exile for empire's banished citizens, outcasts, criminals, and bastards, that becomes a thriving kingdom of its own over the course of hundreds of years of existence. For a computer game, it's quite impossible to recreate what pen & paper role playing games offer: endless adventures in a land of possibilities limited only by one's imagination. That's why most computer RPGs don't even try to reach that goal. Jeff Vogel's Avernum: Escape From The Pit defies that rule, and is one of the few games in the genre that come close to the analog predecessors in terms of complexity, depth, and scale.

If you're up for the challenge of a insanely vast feature-packed world that can takes months to explore in full, dare to descend into Avernum: Escape From The Pit. The 50% off release discount lasts until Monday, January 12, at 10:59AM GMT.
I can't get it now, so to the wishlist it goes. Thanks for the release, GOG!

Grargar: Here you go.
Wait a minute, if Strife is appearing on GOG does that mean we finally get other Doom engine games here soon?

Nope. Doom and Heretic belong to id Software and Zenimax. Night Dive (the publishers behind Strife) have nothing to do with Doom and Heretic.
Why GOG? Why? You did it again! On a week when I am low on money you released a seriously good game for a seriously good price. I'm a Spiderweb/Vogel addict and, after the disappointing rumors and stories of this game not coming here, you did your magic and here it is.
Seriously, now I have to spend money because this is a must buy!
GOG, thanks to you, I am now nearly $5 poorer, and very happy about it. Seriously, this is an excellent release and is a great addition to my Vogel collection, all of which I bought here.
Once again, GOG, this is an excellent week so far. The return of Space Rangers and a new Spiderweb adventure (yes, I know it is a remake, but knowing Vogel there are some surprises in store) and (hopefully) an excellent Thursday release to cap it off!

Now I need to go...The Pit is calling me.

yeah right now the plan has been doing the Avadon trilogy and remaking Avernum 1-3 in the same engine Avadon used in between Avadon releases(in other words do one Avadon game followed by a remake of Avernum then go to the next Avadon title, lather, rinse, repeat). once that is done more then likely he will start on his next new series and hopefully do remakes of Geneforge in between.
Wow. I'm a huge fan of Spiderweb's games (as I've said on past posts) and I was really surprised to see this here, especially given that GOG initially turned it down. Awesome.

Riotact: What would this be like in quality for example, story/combat interparty dialogue, quests etc. compared to the likes of BG and similar quality titles?
In terms of character builds and rulesets, Avernum is rather simple and can't really compare to D&D based games like BG.

What makes Avernum Escape From The Pit particularly great however, is the sense of exploration, which might even exceed BG. The game is incredibly unlinear and basically the only limitation is your own strength (and reputation sometimes). You can go into all directions, you might notice it gets too hard, then come back later and breeze through it. The feeling of character progression is pretty awesome in this game and you really notice how much stronger you get over time. At the beginning you have trouble clearing a cave full of bats and at the end you might accomplish world changing tasks.

The battle system in Avernum Escape From The Pit is also turn based, unlike the combat system in BG/IWD and the like. At least Avernum has 4 playable characters which makes the combat at least a little bit more strategical as in Avadon (3 characters is just too little to enjoy this type of combat imo).

Escape from the Pit is the perfect game to get into Spiderweb games in general.

I've been waiting for this game for a long time. Very nice release, Wishlisted 8).

vicklemos: I always get confused with titles like Avadon, Eschalon, Avernum, Eidolon... :P
It sounds, to my ears, like everything's the same deal.
Apart from the fact you woke up and did not remember who you are or where you are?

;-)

You are right ofcourse...

that I will use to beat the GOG staff if we don't get more LucasArts games. ;-)
The more comments we get like this from the community at large, the longer the delay on other LA releases :P

*sets the releases further back*

I, for one, am happy every time that the BEST digital distribution games site - EVER - acquires another game. Especially if it is from Spiderweb Software! Thank you! :D

*g* I'll second this request, though. It'd be great to get this here along with the rest of the Spiderweb games, instead of it being only on Steam.
