The third generation of the insanely extensive RPG is here.

Avernum: Escape From The Pit, a vastly enhanced modern remake of one of the biggest and longest-running hard-core isometric RPG worlds that came to being with Exile in 1995, is available 50% off until Monday, for Windows and Mac on GOG.com.

Avernum: Escape From The Pit tells an epic story of a huge underground prison colony - place of exile for empire's banished citizens, outcasts, criminals, and bastards, that becomes a thriving kingdom of its own over the course of hundreds of years of existence. For a computer game, it's quite impossible to recreate what pen & paper role playing games offer: endless adventures in a land of possibilities limited only by one's imagination. That's why most computer RPGs don't even try to reach that goal. Jeff Vogel's Avernum: Escape From The Pit defies that rule, and is one of the few games in the genre that come close to the analog predecessors in terms of complexity, depth, and scale.

If you're up for the challenge of a insanely vast feature-packed world that can takes months to explore in full, dare to descend into Avernum: Escape From The Pit. The 50% off release discount lasts until Monday, January 12, at 10:59AM GMT.

JudasIscariot: Sorry for the removal, DCT, but thanks for the mention and the spoilerific screen has been removed. The page will update in a few minutes or so :)

DCT: no need to apologize for the removal, I had a long tedius week at work which isn't close to be done yet and of course it also dosn't help that when I got home yesterday around 1 or 2 in the morning I stayed up for a extra four hours watching New Japan's Wrestle kingdom 9 PPV(amazing show and didn't feel like a four hour show either, it was also the first to have a optional english commentary done by the legendary Jim Ross doing play by play and with Matt Striker doing the colour commentary) so I was a wee bit out of it and didn't think till after posting that I should of just PM'd you the link to the screenshot instead of posting it here for anybody and everyone to see.

Ah well what's done is done. Anyway the only think I can think off why Jeff would send that was either he forgot what that screenshot was used for in the game or he mistook it for a similar looking one he uses in the introduction/back story part of the game
Well, I don't like editing people's posts just out of the blue and all but it had to be done :)

opeter1: Will Jeff remake all the old Avernum games to this form?

So, this it the first one, the second (Crystal Souls) is in work, so can we hope, that he will remake all the other games in the following years?
We can only hope :)

I do hope he ends up remaking the Geneforge games as those were my particular favorites of his :) Crafting party members by the sheer force of one's will, how could you NOT love that feature? :D

As far as I know, the first trilogy. The second trilogy is not old enough yet to be remaked. I think he mentioned remaking Geneforge somewhere.

Also, Avadon is supposed to be a trilogy so 3rd part of Avadon should be next after Avernum: Crystal Souls.

yeah the plan was one Avadon game, followed by one Avernum remake then back to Avadon then Avernum and so on. A remake of Geneforge sounds interesting so long as it doesn't get dumbed down.

Last I remember hearing he had no plans on remaking 4-6, that may have changed so who knows.

These recent releases (bundle spam) are quite underwhelming. Hope the next Lucas Arts batch is due soon.

Sorry for asking but how is this release "bundle spam"? From what I know, it's been included in HB only once, while some other titles that are certainly bundle fodder have been included 3-4 times (Thomas Was Alone, Monaco and Ittle Dew spring to my mind, especially as I have like 2 copies of the first two from HB!). Plus, I missed it the only time it was included in a bundle along with the other Spiderweb games. Such a pity...
So, all in all, nice release, wishlisted and I'll get it probably later...

P.S-edit-I hope for LA too, but it'll probably take a while-also, I just wanted to point out that some of these releases don't seem that underwhelming for other people...

edit-typos and clarification

Looks promising. But since I have still wishlisted Avernum: The Complete Saga, skipping this one for now. Maybe in future I'll go for it. Anyway thanks GOG for another release ^^

Treasure: How are these fantastic games "bundle spam"?
It was a hyperbole. I don't know these games, nor do I know if they showed up in bundles, as I don't buy any. No doubt that they have their niche audience. But we're talking about the impossibly high standards of a carefully curated store here, where every release is supposed to be an awe-inspiring event. Two remakes of obscure indie titles don't feel like that to me.

That's just your personal oppinion. For you it might be "bundle spam". For me it's exactly the kind of games I want to see here (and 400 votes on the wishlist prove that I'm not alone).

And that's just your personal opinion. Approving of a release is in no way more valid than disapproving of one. But, with all due respect, you should have the sincerity to acknowledge your leaning towards a niche product. Because if you want to go by wishlist votes:

All Lucas Arts Games +3774

GOG has become a vast and diverse comunity that no longer has a precise focus (good old games) - but the release policy hasn't changed. There's no way to make everybody happy.
Good to see it finally here. Got your guaranteed sale here. ;) Sure, Jeff's games aren't flashy one bit, and once you've played one you pretty much know how all the others play... but I still love them. The combat in them has always felt very satisfying, and for a lowly one-man writing job the stories are always surprisingly well written and his worlds are very engaging.

Figured it wasn't initially released here because GOG just had released the old Avernum collection at the time. Still, it took longer than I thought for it to get here. *shrug* At least that probably means we'll be getting the Avernum 2 remake at release... I hope.

I just hope those ridiculously frustrating invisible ghosts from the old Avernum 1 are gone now. That's really the only time I can say I actually hated combat in a Spiderweb game. Anyway, I kind of stopped part-way through old Avernum 2 because the old UI was just bugging the hell out of me, not to mention somehow getting my ass handed to me repeatedly at that point...
What would this be like in quality for example, story/combat interparty dialogue, quests etc. compared to the likes of BG and similar quality titles?

Sure it is just my opinion as well. But both game are games with perfect retro feeling and so in my opinion they fit very well into GOG's catalogue. And of course your opinion is as valid as mine. I just don't like when releases get disregarded as "bundle spam" just because they are not someone's taste. It's ok not to like every game (I don't like every game as well), but I think one should stay respectful to the developers and the people who like the game.

And when we are talking about niche games, I would say that the whole retro game community is pretty niche.
:) always hoped that the Avernum- and genforge-series get a overhaul...bought and hoping that the rest will get a upgrade too...earlier then later ;)

I've only played Avadon so far but I was surprised about the quality of writing. Not really up there with BG and such on quests but I was positively surprised anyway. I'd expect the same from Avernum since they're all done by the same guy.

Thank you for the reply Daliz, seems like a good deal so, thank you!.
