These remakes don't look a heck of a lot different than the original Avernum games... I spent so many hours playing the original trilogy, I was too sick of them to dive into 4, 5 or 6. Are these actually worth it?
Insta-wishlisted, I have to stay on somewhat of a budget...Gog, ruining wallets since 2008...

Also, the man is much more than his games, he has a weath of published works, just check out his comics!

Instabuy when I have money.
Being unemployed is not good for game hoarding.

Wait.. I could actually play them now?

What do you mean they don't look different? Have you even compared?

That's just the artist for the little stat icons. Jeff has a blog to himself.

viperfdl: Damn, that reminds me that I haven't even played the original, yet.
Do you mean Exile, or Avernum?

supplementscene: I have Avernum 2 and Avadon 2. Should I ideally play the first games before starting these or is is quite seperate? Thanks in advance
They can be played separately, but the story of each ties into the other in sequence, save for 4, 5, and 6.

The events of Avernum 1 lead directly to Avernum 2, and the results of Avernum 2 lead into 3.

Oh, yes, this I know, his description of the day-to-day with his kid is hilarious...Though it has been many, many moons since I read it, glad you linked it to those new to his site!

So the really old ones. Well, the remakes completely replace the first three old games, Avernum 1 itself was rather clunky.
Bought the whole series + Avernum - Escape From The Pit and Avernum 2 - Crystal Souls in a bundle some time ago, yet i barely touch it, gonna be awhile before i buy this.
It's a great series thought.
I really liked Escape From The Pit, even though it was a bit too text heavy for me (the writing was excellent though). Crystal Souls I just couldn't endure all the talking anymore especially because most locations were the same again, so I quite it pretty early. So not really hyped for this.

Well, you could start with the demo (that I linked early in this topic), and once you encounter some sort of demo demon blocking the way (the message should mention that you can't proceed further in the demo), decide whether you are enjoying the game enough to purchase it. If you quit before this, or if you decide the game hasn't been worth it so far, you aren't out the cost of the game.
It warms my heart to see a radically independent developer, whose name and games I remember from digging through Shareware CD-ROMs in the mid-90s, still being at it and going strong in 2018. All the best to you, Jeff and Mariann! =)

I suppose now's the period when you must hone your skills to be ready for the next job to come. Being unemployed and playing cRPGs instead of personal skills improvement doesn't sound too good to me. After you land a job, you can go back in hoarding games and have all the time to wonder when will you be able to actually play them. :P

Well, you could try the demos and then decide if they're worth it.

MightyPinecone: Having to pay extra for the manual is pretty low. I hope this is a mistake.
avatar
JudasIscariot: The game has the entire manual available within the game.
Thanks for the reply, and whilst it is better than nothing, I still think this is pushing it in terms of selling us the game in pieces. I know people who finds the very absence of a printed manual to begin with a serious flaw with digital purchases; being unable to print the manual yourself without having to pay extra adds insult to injury. It also smells of slippery slope, where manuals used to be a part of the package; today one can apparently sell them as extras, as long as the instructions are also available in game; and tomorrow we find ourselves having to buy them as an extra—regardless of whether there are any decent instructions in game or not.

Yeah, in my book this is not cool.
