MightyPinecone: Having to pay extra for the manual is pretty low. I hope this is a mistake.
The game has the entire manual available within the game.
Haven't played the series. Have purchased earlier the "Avernum Complete Series" pack.

Given the overlap naming (the "Complete" series already has an Avernum 3), how does Avernum 3: Ruined World fit in? Is this a new adventure on a side spur from Av 3, or is this its own game with no particular tie-in to the other game? Is the Complete Series more like "Avernum 1, parts 1 thru 6"?

Thanks for clarification.
I have Avernum 2 and Avadon 2. Should I ideally play the first games before starting these or is is quite seperate? Thanks in advance

This is a remake of the Avernum 3 in the complete series which has been updated with the Avadon engine and quite a bit of added content.

Escape from the Pit, Crystal Souls and Ruined World are remakes of Avernum 1, 2 and 3 included in the complete package.

And just to mention it, Avernum 1-3 are remakes of Exile 1-3.

Kunovski: could someone please explain how this game (series) compares to other, more mainstream RPGs? I mean, these really look very good yet they seem to be considered rather obscure :)

I don't give a damn about graphics (I like it), so what's so different about these compared to for example Divinity Original Sin or Pillars of Eternity?

thanks! :)
It's rather humble in terms of form (no in-game music, as you can see on screenshot, quite easthetic, but not "wealthy" graphics, a lot of the plot is explained in long talks/descriptions etc - first two Fallouts had relatively similar style, of course aside from the vastly different "game's world"), but huge in terms of content - plenty of locations, characters, sub-quests etc. It's also very friendly for experimenting with character development - your team members are levelling quite fast and skills are quite well described. There is plenty of fighting, and usually it's working really good, you shouldn't find there situation which is plague of many cRPGs, that your characters are notoriously missing for first hours of gameplay.

Have hope that it will be a bit helpful. I highly recommend to check demo versions (previous 2 games also have demos).

Let me quote from the description: The story of Avernum 3 is self-contained, and previous experience with Avernum games isn't required.

As the other parts before. Any references will be explained very well. At least it was like this in the other parts, so I expect in this part too. Including an Intro to what happened before.

I gratefully salute you, experienced spelunker. I shall wishlist Escape From The Pit to be able to go into the abyss properly prepared.

thank you very much! :) I still don't really understand why isn't it more loved by the gamers (just how everyone longed for Baldur's Gate remake, yet here they have almost the same but with new story, new background, new everything...), do they really cling to modern graphics? I should give the demo a try ;)

Not added. Restored. The first Avernum 3 cut out so much content, artifacts, mini-adventures and side-quests from the original Exile 3. There are events in Exile 3 that never happen in Avernum 3.

To know the actual lore of the game, play the Exile games. It is the most complete of the saga. Even this Avadon remaster still doesn't capture the labor of love that is Exile 3: Ruined World.
Damn, that reminds me that I haven't even played the original, yet.
