DoomSooth: Where do you think Nebula got its NeoGeo code from? It was derived from MAME's NeoGeo driver. Those guys aren't going to do more work than they have to do. If DotEmu decided to use any Nebula code at all then that would explain a lot but the SNK Anniversary Bundle sets work in MAME up to .171 or so without the new BIOS files. Use ten year old code or use code that's about two years old? I know which one I'd use. Then there's the fact that the SNK Anniversary Bundle was released just a few months after MAME's license changed.
Yes, Nebula derived its Neo-Geo code from MAME in the beginning, but has since been entirely rewritten. MAME is predominantly software based, and Elsemi wanted his emulator to be somewhat high level for better support of older PC hardware, so eventually the core of his program mutated into its own beast entirely. It's also a point of pride in many emulation enthusiast programmers to do the work themselves, that's the point for a lot of them. Infact Elsemi helped solve some emulation riddles that other emulator authors could benefit from.

Every interpretation of vaguely documented hardware helps everyone in the end.

I'll stick to MAME. They prefer accuracy when they can swing it instead of high-level emulation. Have been snapping up all commercial emulation releases that use arcade ROMs whenever I can.
Buy GOG version so you get a legal ROM and a just working emulator.
Some games even get GOG Galaxy multiplayer support.

Open sourced emulator will never outdated, because you can always write/fix the codes.
I know you can get everything for free on the internet, but those downloaded ROMs are not legal.

That is why we buy games here. Or why you pay to GOG for those games that you can download for free?
Looking forward to these. Thank you GoG.

I'll buy them here to support GOG but I already bought the SNK Anniversary Bundle from Humble Bundle. I hope GOG acquires more emulated arcade games.
I'm glad to see more SNK games on GOG, but I hope we'll see the rest of the Metal Slug series soon!
Cool. Just in time for my 8bitdo SNES gamepad to arrive today. I actually didn't buy any of these the first time around, so I'm definitely snapping up a bunch today. I'm likely to go with both the Action and Arcade pack. :)

I'm not sure about the fighting pack because historically I'm not that great at these. How complicated in move sets and required reflexes are these?

musteriuz: How good of a game is the turf masters? I could really use a fun golf game. It does look like the one I used to play in the arcade. I remember it as fun. Hmmm....

Also, it seems as if the games do not come with manuals. Will they work with kb+m? Is there any guidance as to how to play?
You can actually go to the Humble Bundle website and test-play some of these games on their store pages. They only have keyboard (no mouse) or gamepad controls. The web trials are pretty short, but it should give you some idea.

Since they're based on the arcade games, all of these games seem to have a (skippable) short tutorial before starting a game that tell you what the various button do. Manuals aren't really necessary for these.

ReynardFox: Oh. More butchered Neo-Geo ports. Great.

It actually infuriates me that I have to turn down all the SNK releases on GOG, but when I can get an experience that is orders of magnitude better, more respectful and authentic in MAME, why the hell should I pay money for these horribly scaled, horribly unoptimized, graphically tampered with, inferior versions?
Is this the same emulation version as was featured in Humble Bundle?

Because that one pissed the living hell out of me. I love the old Samurai Shodown 2 (yes, the misspelling is part of the title, apparently XD), but having a modern emulation release that does not even allow to change key bindings is beyond ridiculous. Not to mention all the rest of the problems with the HB version.

I'd love to snatch these titles, but not sure I want to get burned on botched functionality again.

Thanks.
Is this version of Garou: MotW a DotEmu quality product? With lower framerate, laggy sound and no option to reconfigure keyboard controls? They never fixed steam version of MotW. I know it was a port, and GOG version is just a rom, but maybe this time they provided some better frontend with basic options that MAME and Nebula had since ages ago.

It's really shame that one of the best 2D fighting games ever got this kind of treatment on PC. Hopefully, GOG version has some improvements.
The packs are making me rebuy *all* the snk games I already have to get the best discount.

It wasn't that way before. Is it a mistake or is this how it is? I'm trying to get sengoku 3 and neo turf master's for 3 bucks. Not pay 3 each if I don't have to. I already own all the other games in the arcade pack. Why would I buy them again? I appreciate any help or clarification on this. Thanks.

okay it's fine on desktop...but the issues I had were on android phone in case any gog staffer sees this.

Frug. I was wrong. The single game costs less than 1,50€ if you buy the entire bundle. As it is, I don't have the funds. Crap. I'll have to wait.

The reviews about the ports\emulations are terrible..
Why can't these companies use the already existing ones?

Okay, since I was one of the folks who found out about DotEmu's shitty hack jobs...

The emulator they use is based on Nebula. ElSemi, the emulator's author, licensed a version of the program to Gametap (for their old website) that did not include any CPU emulation cores, because those were not licensed for commercial use.

Gametap took his core emulator, added their own emulation cores (who knows from where), then used it for their service. A few years ago, DotEmu bought the rights to use the emulator from Gametap, which is why there's a lot of references to Nebula in the program, including the datfiles.

Unfortunately DotEmu didn't actually do much to update the program and actually BROKE or DISABLED some things in the process, like controller remapping. And then, for some reason, their Steam versions of the games had skippy audio, framerate problems, and were weird emulation / simulation hybrid Frankenstein's creatures.

At one point, I had HOPED they would go back and fix the programs and their bugs but they're DotEmu, they already got their cash, so fuck the players.

Please DO NOT BUY THIS TRASH. If the game was ported by Code Mystics, then it's going to be good. But everything DotEmu touches is shit.

I did a Sengoku 3 review based on my experience with the series (Mame, actual arcade machines - sengoku only- wii's virtual console arcade / neo geo cd) with the little time I have. Didn't know these were notorious for their bad rep. Will try some later and see how it goes. Maybe update my review? Who knows!
