I'm looking for some two-controller, single system type coop games that I can play with a six year old. Preferably, they would be games we could play on my laptop, but we do have an XBox 360 that is an option.

Anything?

Brothers: A tale of two sons (Not this one, I forgot that only one controller is used to control both brothers) I just went through the tags on my Steam library and was suggesting from games tagged with Local Co-op
Guacamelee
Spelunky, might be a bit hard for 6 year old but if he likes challenge then go for it.
Trine 1 and Trine 2
Broforce, if you are okay with cartoon violence
Rayman: Origns, it will be in daily deals at 75% discount so you can pick it up in this sale.

Edit: Brothers can be apparently played with a keyboard and controller but there's a few problems which are not listed so there's that.
Edit 2: I used depressurizer to tag the games in my library and apparently someone put the tag, "Local Co-op" for Brothers, either by mistake or in the same way Postal 2 is tagged as "Family Friendly".

This this this and this.

I'd stress Lego because it's a six year old but I'll be forty in January and I still love them. :P
Monaco is great, but on PC the multiplayer is Steam only if I remember right, but there's also sold on xBox (never played it there though).

He is asking about Local Co-op and I can confirm that Monaco has Local Co-op having played it with my friends that way a while ago.
If you're using steam.. perhaps?
Hit me up if want any of them, still got some gifts in my inventory.
Thanks for the suggestions!

I've already got Never Alone, Trine 1 & 2, Contraption Maker, and LEGO Marvel Super Heros.

I didn't realize that the Trines or Lego games did local coop!

We spend lots of time playing with Lego, so the Lego games seem like a natural choice!
I remember that The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King had a good Local Coop-Mode, even on PC. But its maybe not the best option for a six year old boy.

I would also recommend the the LEGO games mentioned before. I've played the LEGO Star Wars games and was excited about them. I think they are the best choice for a six year old. Some of the LEGO games, Batman and Harry Potter, are available here.
Chicken Run, plenty of chicken Coop's in that.

Yay! Lego games are great! Nothing wrong with being 40 and still playing Lego games.

<span class="bold">ibb &amp; obb</span>   ( Gameplay )
Here are a few titles with local co-op:
Trine & Trine 2
Magicka
Jamestown
Renegade Ops
Foul Play
ibb & obb
Castle Crashers
BattleBlock Theater
Lovers in a dangerous spacetime

You can't get more co-op than this. You're literally on the same ship. You succeed or fail together.

I played it with some friends on a big TV with X-Boxish controllers. It was great. Everyone loved it (ok, almost everyone).

The game is also very children friendly, yet engrossing for all ages.

I see others have already mentioned Trine.

There is also Pixeljunk Shooter. Totally playable in coop mode on the same machine (tried it briefly with a friend) and it has some very clever mechanics. Again, very child friendly.
