MarkoH01: Sorry, but I just had to add this since the way you posted it here let is appear that they actually did something good with the "enhanced" edition.
I think you have misunderstood my message as I've never said at any point that the "enhanced" edition was better, compared to the original. I only have mentioned that they have released their vision of the updated version, but preserved the access to the original version as well (personally I've enjoyed both versions for different reasons, but the butchered final "boss fight" sequence was definitely my least favourite part about the update)

MarkoH01: Regarding Real Myst I share the opinion several (as well as the one I am party quoting here) already expressed here. Make it a bonus.
and give a discount to the people who have already got Real Myst.

I completely understood the intention of your post. That's why I agreed on it. But while it was a good thing from the devs of MIND to let both versions be accessible I just felt the urge to add that in this specific case it might have been better if this new version did not even exist and while it's a great decision of the devs to let both versions be accessible the fact how they left their game broken and unfinished is nothing they can be praised for. I just wanted to prevent people to think that these devs or the remastered version actually are "good" even though it's the right idea to not exclude people from any versions of the game.

We can discuss all day long the levels of involvement developer was ought to show.
What I can add is the fact that I've played both versions and I've never noticed neither of them feel broken or unfinished as both ran without a single crash until the end credits.
I also disagree that the "Enhanced" version has no right to exist as its intention was clearly to adapt the game to a different platform (the aforementioned VR), which didn't bring anything new to flat-screen users and also caused some locations to be re-designed / simplified for less nauseating experience for players with VR-headset. My personal thumbs-up also goes to complete removal of absurdly excessive god-rays that made the picture look much clearer.

Nevertheless, that's not the point of my original post, so I shall stop discussing the game itself - the point was: "it's good to have access to older versions of the game exactly for reasons that some people might not like the changes, and I shall praise any developer that's considerate enough to facilitate such practice"

timppu: I see RealMyst isn't supported in Windows 10, so is there some compatibility problem there?
avatar
Thiev: Not really, it will be updated for Win10 Soon™.
Er, but Real Myst is being removed on June 18th from this store, according this very thread. O_o

And "Real Myst" (not Masterpiece Edition) isn't listed amongst the seven games that are being updated for the 25th anniversary. Just the Real Myst Masterpiece Edition.

EDIT: Ah, well there you go, realMyst updated as of 2018 Jun 15. Also, the Myst Series changelog thread.

You can probably bet your left boot this will be springing up for another round on torrent sites after the 18th. People are weirdly fond of cataloguing every single version of software for some reason. (That said, I'm the numpty who's still holding onto an iBook g4 long after the charger exploded so maybe I'm not so different. XD)
Thanks, Linko. If I were your boss, I'd give you a promotion.
Well that's a blow. I agree with the above that this title should at least be included with its counterpart as a "goodie" versus complete removal.
Not every circumstance is the same, and I think it devalues a principle to stand behind it merely for the sake of standing behind it.

Both Real Myst and RM:ME have been sold along side each other for a long time now, for whatever reasons that may have been. This is the original creator, and they have decided what best expresses their intent and their ideas. They apparently no longer want to keep pushing a sort of first draft of their ideas for walking through Myst, as such it's something less than complete. Probably the best they could do in the year 2000 with the resources and knowledge they had at the time, the best of their abilities to share what they had in mind.

I'd suspect they have other things they want to do with their lives than keep experiencing people pointing out something wrong with their first attempt from decades ago, especially when they feel that first attempt is inferior compared to their latest attempts at expressing themselves about the same thing. (See original post in this thread.) They've revised their creation (a few years ago), revised how they want to say what they want to say.

That's how I see it. I'm fine with that.

phaolo: Yeah, that's why I got Myst ME instead :P

Fender_178: Also with the newly successful Kickstarter the Myst series is going to be re-released as a remasters for it's 25th anniversary.

I disagree. Keeping old attempts at a certain products - even beta releases - as a BONUS inside the BONUS SECTION would not lead people to complain about it since it's only a bonus and it would also be a possibility to show how much the Masterpiece edition improved. There's absolutely no reason to not add it as a bonus.

Of course, the other way of looking at it is that they got paid the first time round. Then may have had some benign thought like you describe above to fix things for the user and make a new edition, for which they once again get paid. Now they see the massive slew of money grabs arrive and think, hello lets go for a third bite of the cherry as the kitty is getting low. Its called doing a Beamdog and its getting pretty prevalent. So much so I am thinking or putting my Neverwinter nights boxed edition on eBay with a post it note of the front with the word enhanced on it. Should net me a nice large amount of cash.
