... through Steam?

I went to the games place today and I saw the retail of the Pillars of Eternity. So, just being curious I start to read the back part and I see that to activate the cd you need to have an account in Steam. Wtf, I understood that the game is DRM-Free (in their website is written), but it's only DRM-FREE via GOG? All the retail versions are going to be needed to be activated through Steam??

Thanks for the answers

Yup. The only Steamless version of Pillars of Eternity, is through GOG.

Yes, same issue with Wasteland 2 sadly.
Then, for the collectors (you know.. the newly opened box, booklets and all that stuff) have to go through Steam... Cause obviously, I'll not pay the royal edition twice and I'll not risk to have my game access deleted for whatever...

Sad my friends. Sad...

Welcome to the brave new world in which you don't own your stuff, just rent it.

You know, I never did get my DRM-free DVDs from IneXile. Whatever happened to that?

Good question... they had a period where you could request DRM-free discs, right? If I remember correctly, I think I found out about that too late.

We don't really own anything digital really, do we.
It's not our property, I understand that cause the rights goes all to the developers, but at least I would like to have the right to play it when I want how I want. Not binded to any application or terms that are allowed to substract you that game whenever they want.
The price we pay is high in most of the games.

Publishers and game developers have an unfathomable fear of used games and people sharing, so that's why they have to artificially devalue your retail copy. I don't really understand, back in the day games were made to be shared. Remember spawning in Warcraft II and Starcraft? Basically you could install the game and play multiplayer without the CD as long as at least one person on the game had the CD.

Wrong. The crowdfunders-exclusive version is 100% DRM-Free.

Well, you can't buy it.

Oh sure, nail him on a technicality!

Actually, you can. You can buy it used from a previous owner. I did it with Shadowrun Returns.
Or you could just have crowdfunded the game.

At the same price as other versions? I highly doubt it. Also, we're talking about current options, not what you could have initially done; the crowfounding ship has long since sailed away.
