djdarko: I'm personally t̶h̶i̶n̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶o̶f̶ going PC only from here on.
To me it is PC and Android, but truth to be told I very rarely play Android games at this point, even though I routinely buy about every Humble Mobile Bundle I see. They both share a similar trait: semi-open platforms where there are different HW/device vendors, and even the app purchases are not locked in to some official channel only like on consoles or iOS. For instance, all my purchased Android games are from Humble Bundle, not GooglePlay.
I bought both Playstation and PS2 when they were quite mature already, with lots of games, also in discount. I thought that's how it would be from then on, I will buy some gaming console on each console generation to complement my PC gaming, nearer the end of each console generation.
For some reason I didn't get the same urge to do it anymore with PS3/XBox360, and still no sign of it with PS4/XBoxOne either. It does seem the original black XBox changed it: console games weren't anymore a different breed of games than those you got on PC, but for the most part the very same games, only sometimes with different controllers (e.g. FPS games) and maybe some difference is video quality. For a simple example, I think all those Medal of Honor and Call of Duty games on the PS2-era were different for PCs and consoles (at least PS2): the PC got its very own versions of those FPS games, while PS2 got its own. They were different titles (even with different names), designed exclusively for that platform.
I guess this can work both ways for different people:
- For some this means they don't have need for a gaming PC anymore, as they mostly can play the "same" games on a cheaper console. I guess jamyskis is like this, as he has vowed to leave PC gaming?
- For others like me it has the opposite effect, there is no incentive to buy a console anymore, as I can have most of the games on PC too. It was different when console gaming and games felt so much different from PC gaming for the most part, even for the genres.
I would have thought that all in all there are far more people in the first group (ie. more people becoming console-only gamers) and PC gaming would have withered somewhat, but it seems the super-cheap games on PC (also thanks to Steam) is making many people to flock to PC, even some who were earlier exclusively console gamers. So it isn't so clear cut.
Mobile gaming is a black horse, I am not sure what to think about it. Sometimes I feel it is a big threat to both PC and console gaming as I see so many kids using exclusively their tablets and phones for pretty much everything (gaming, social networking/internet etc.), instead of either PCs or consoles. Meaning, the next generation of gamers is not as accustomed to playing on PCs nor consoles as we are. Apparently the pull hasn't been quite that definite though, and there are maybe trends in mobile gaming that even repel some gamers from it (e.g. free-to-play games with transactions).
I've seen a couple of kids, who I thought would be mobile-only gamers, look into PC gaming too when they got bigger. Minecraft is to partly blame for that, but even they seem to realize some things in PC (and console) gaming are done better than on mobile gaming. So now those two areas maybe complement each other.
