tinyE: Any hacker worth his/her salt can create some major carnage with a PC (eventually even world domination) because a PC is the passport to virtually everything. What the hell is a console a passport too? Netflix? You take the entertainment from a console and it's a useless hunk of plastic and wires, like Lady GaGa, and no one is creating, developing, or controlling anything with a fucking XBox.
Actually, homebrew devs have made some quite impressing OS's for even 6th gen consoles.
Eh, "Steam". Steam isn't PC gaming. It's a console platform that just happens to run on PC hardware.

That was my reaction at first contact too. :$

Wishbone: It doesn't really matter when we're talking market shares, does it? One DreamCast game released in 10 years gives the DreamCast a current market share of, what, 0.000001%?

rtcvb32: Market share? Is this the stock market?

Unfortunately i'm having trouble trying to put into words what i'm trying to explain. Systems and games don't have to be current/next gen to be relevant. Yeah the Dreamcast has a small installbase overall, but it doesn't remove it's relevancy, unlike say: The CDi...

But it's unlikely it would be highly lucrative...
I can't really think of a situation where the term market share relates too strongly to the stock market. It's mostly used with regards to a specific industry. I concede that I don't know everything and may not know what you are referencing.
I'm personally t̶h̶i̶n̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶o̶f̶ going PC only from here on.

Not impressed with any of the new console exclusive games coming out, tons of last gen rehashes, the market is flooded with DLC and micro-transactions, and the kicker is how many games have no cross-buy feature from Seventh to Eighth gen systems even when both game versions are released at the same price on the same day. And what is the excuse for lack of PS1 Classics compatibility on PS4? Is it that difficult, or are they actually hoping for people to rebuy those games again? The fact that Suikoden II was re-upped without PSP compatibility is already proof of them slowly sweeping the last gen under the rug.

Speaking of PSN, they can't even manage (or don't want to) allow upgrade paths for sales on games, games that are free upgrades on GOG, like Retro City Rampage DX require a full re-purchase on PSN. They don't even have a game shelf - I have no idea what I own without looking through my gmail purchase records, because all my purchases are lumped together in a giant unsorted list along with PS+ games, and every DLC and demo I've ever downloaded. Pathetic.

Sadly, even Nintendo jumped on the DLC bandwagon, marking the Wii U a system I'll never invest in either. It's basically impossible to buy a complete physical release these days, so why even bother. GOG is a million times better, and even Steam (which is something I've avoided using for years) is looking better and better every day.
Whoa, I didn't know Judas worked at GOG and was, at the same time, the 2nd lead singer of the band Drowning Pool! :P
Next gen[sic] consoles are PC's with DRM

Build your own PC and feel the Love!
Even if i hate steam. I like the fact that it puts pc gaming above consoles. I hate consoles. They almost destroyed pc some years ago. Also, their filthy influence still persists in some pc games, like oversimplicity of gameplay mechanisms, limited size and structure of in-game locations, or being exclusive to one place.

What i despise the most is the brand/consoles war. And the constant technological rush and advancement, which renders your PS3 after 4 years practically junk (4 is out etc) even though you paid all that money and bought all those games, is the worst.

I love my patience and my emulation, thank you. For me, i now am enjoying the PS2 era on my PC and through emulation. I am about to start a new game, Berserk.
Ive always been a pc gamer. Ive given consoles a chance but, they just don't have the feel of a pc game. Keyboard and mouse, allows a greater connection to games.
Thanks to GOG, games 20 yeas ago can still grace my morden PC.

Consoles backwards compability? Ha if you want to play a PS2 game and your PS2 broke down and cannot get a replacement because it's sales is discontinued, you have to content with emulated version of them at the PC

To me it is PC and Android, but truth to be told I very rarely play Android games at this point, even though I routinely buy about every Humble Mobile Bundle I see. They both share a similar trait: semi-open platforms where there are different HW/device vendors, and even the app purchases are not locked in to some official channel only like on consoles or iOS. For instance, all my purchased Android games are from Humble Bundle, not GooglePlay.

I bought both Playstation and PS2 when they were quite mature already, with lots of games, also in discount. I thought that's how it would be from then on, I will buy some gaming console on each console generation to complement my PC gaming, nearer the end of each console generation.

For some reason I didn't get the same urge to do it anymore with PS3/XBox360, and still no sign of it with PS4/XBoxOne either. It does seem the original black XBox changed it: console games weren't anymore a different breed of games than those you got on PC, but for the most part the very same games, only sometimes with different controllers (e.g. FPS games) and maybe some difference is video quality. For a simple example, I think all those Medal of Honor and Call of Duty games on the PS2-era were different for PCs and consoles (at least PS2): the PC got its very own versions of those FPS games, while PS2 got its own. They were different titles (even with different names), designed exclusively for that platform.

I guess this can work both ways for different people:

- For some this means they don't have need for a gaming PC anymore, as they mostly can play the "same" games on a cheaper console. I guess jamyskis is like this, as he has vowed to leave PC gaming?

- For others like me it has the opposite effect, there is no incentive to buy a console anymore, as I can have most of the games on PC too. It was different when console gaming and games felt so much different from PC gaming for the most part, even for the genres.

I would have thought that all in all there are far more people in the first group (ie. more people becoming console-only gamers) and PC gaming would have withered somewhat, but it seems the super-cheap games on PC (also thanks to Steam) is making many people to flock to PC, even some who were earlier exclusively console gamers. So it isn't so clear cut.

Mobile gaming is a black horse, I am not sure what to think about it. Sometimes I feel it is a big threat to both PC and console gaming as I see so many kids using exclusively their tablets and phones for pretty much everything (gaming, social networking/internet etc.), instead of either PCs or consoles. Meaning, the next generation of gamers is not as accustomed to playing on PCs nor consoles as we are. Apparently the pull hasn't been quite that definite though, and there are maybe trends in mobile gaming that even repel some gamers from it (e.g. free-to-play games with transactions).

I've seen a couple of kids, who I thought would be mobile-only gamers, look into PC gaming too when they got bigger. Minecraft is to partly blame for that, but even they seem to realize some things in PC (and console) gaming are done better than on mobile gaming. So now those two areas maybe complement each other.

Good news for us, I guess? The real good news is gaming is still going strong since the Atari VCS first shipped in 1977.
