Starmaker: It wasn't. Judging by the tweet above, Zach had intended GOG to be the primary DRM-free distributor for the game and had to look for an alternative ASAP at release. Whatever the disagreement was, it wasn't "nah I don't want to maintain a build here". This is why the situation is so doubleplusungood: if GOG can't resolve a disagreement over the amazing masterpiece that is Opus Magnum with Zach, how can we hope they'll do anything about Discworld or NOLF?

ElPrimordial: Ok, granted, but people can lie. That's why its imperative that GoG be transparent and sincere in this subject.
I'm not saying Zach can't lie (I'm pretty sure he isn't, but it's unimportant). The fact of the matter is he was scrambling for an alternate DRM-free distributor at release. This means, no matter who initiated the fallout and who's to blame for it, the initial negotiations were in good faith, and GOG's job was to reestablish it, because the game is a masterpiece (also a fact) and it's GOG's job to resolve difficulties with rightsholders and sell awesome DRM-free games here.

I agree with you, its in GOG's hands now but we need to know what happened. "Looks too much like a mobile game" its the lamest excuse I ever read. We need to know GOG side now. For the moment we hear only one side.

yogsloth: I would buy anything Zachtronics puts out.

Do it.
This.

I lucked into SpaceChem in the Frozen Synapse bundle in 2011. The rest, as they say, is history.

I rarely ever do this, even from developers who produced masterpieces, but in this case I agree. If it means getting it from Steam, then that's where I'll get it from.

well, if they didnt have given a damn about maintaining a DRM free build in addition with the steam version, they wouldnt suddenly have added a drm free version on Humble Store last weekend, a few days after said tweet, don't you think ?

because when the game was released, the humble store only listed it for steam and without drm-free build included... and now it does

As I wrote before, that's why is imperative GoG tell their version of this story. So far we only read one side. We need to know both sides.
Bump. I don't want GOG to think we've forgotten about this travesty™. I still can't get over GOG passing on what seems to be Zach's best game yet.
It has now been 10 days, GoG has been notified about their decision in the gaming news, and some users here questioned their decision via mail, and there is two threads on the GoG forum about it. So if GoG wanted to "tell their version of this story", they would most likely have gone and done so already.

That said, the game's graphic does LOOK casual. True, the gameplay is way hardcore and the text is way too small to be read on a tablet, but still, I get why one might dismiss it as "just a mobile game".

Still, it's not wise to dismiss a pure pc game, when GoG readily accept so many console/mobile ports.

in what way, though? What makes these graphics "casual"?

it is a beautiful game, the visuals are crisp and clear and fit for purpose - how could they have been made for a game like this to be less casual and still functional?

So no real news from GOG ? I was hesitating to send them an email too, I don't know if it could be useful.
All of this is really a shame and I hope the game will arrive here finally :/

Then maybe it's a matter of money and that they can't speak about because of NDAs which then leads to calling it a mobile game rejection to whip up some indie hipster shilling on it's behalf.

No. No it doesn't. It most resembles a kickstarter revival grand RPG such as Pillars or Tyranny.

shall i have to remind gentle folks here that GOG's catalog include games like 1849, Skulls of the Shogun, Rebuild 3, Mini Metro, Kingdom Rush, Little Inferno, or Battlevoid Harbinger ? edit: oh, and how could i have forgotten the bit.trip family as well ?

(no offense meant for those games, i in fact have some of them, played them and liked them... was mostly reacting about the notion of "casual graphics" and "mobile games")

I really am sad both about GOG decision, and GOG lack of explanation/disclosure, regarding a dev studio that had all of its other titles so far here on the catalog already. It really feels odd !

When a game is not good enough for GOG. *facepalm*
