It would be nice if the project's homepage clearly stated the project's (incomplete) status. So as to not waste time for people who just want to play the game.

rtcvb32: I'll try and give the games a try with the new engine. My only concern is the engine is labeled Alpha, so I wonder if there's any issues to worry about, or if it's just minor things (non-game breaking) they are fixing before it hits a full release.
Well, like I said, the engine is still in a pre-alpha state. Lara herself is mostly functional, but vehicles, NPCs and enemies are not working yet (due to missing AI on the latter's part). Other, more minor things like menus are also not implemented, but compared to the enemy AI they should not be much of a hassle.

Their plan is to get TR1 in a fully playable state, and then move on from there; which is why AI is being worked on before vehicles (the easier of the two jobs).

snowkatt: collision detection and enemy AI are not working yet
but you can run around in a level
Collision is is already mostly working. Otherwise you could not run around the level at all.

rtcvb32: I see... Makes me hesitate using it then.

snowkatt: we are alpha testers basically
though this time around we dont have the dubious "honour"of paying for it
Pay for what? The engine is gratis. You do need to have the assets to run the games, but the free demos you can still download work too.

You wouldn't want to if all you want to do is play the old games; but if you want to help test the engine out and give feedback to the developers, it would be helpful.

Fairfox: Sounds like it's going to be a looooong way off, anyways...
Could be. Though there is really no telling with a project like this. To get TR1 in a playable state what needs to be finished is menus, enemy AI, collision fine tuning and event scripting. I imagine that the AI is going to be the largest hurdle.

I think snowkatt was taking a jab to Early Access and In Developement games where people complain about paying to be testers.

I see. I also get that some people don't find this sort of thing interesting, and that's perfectly OK. I just posted this here for the subset of people who might be interested in these sorts of projects (which given OpenMW's popularity, is more than I would have thought a year ago).

i was
and basically in most of those instances ( and with a lot of "AAA"games) we do get the dubious "honor"of having to pay to beta test games

With projects like this, the "alpha testers" actually do a lot of good. The developers can only spend so much time testing for bugs, while adding features at the same time.

king_mosiah: OpenTomb

amrit9037: Thank you.
I would have never knew about it.
It's always a good thing when people try to conserve old games by remaking it's engine.
It would have been far better if SE had released their source codes.
It's possible that they may not be able to share the original code, even if they wanted to. In any case, with OpenTomb there are some advantages that come with the new engine. For instance, LUA scripting; which I imagine is more pleasant to work with than whatever the original engine used.

I suppose a little update is in order... There has been progress on implementing the enemy AI in the original Tomb Raider; you can now kill enemies and they have death animations. Enemies can also track and follow Lara, but they do not attack her yet. Once the AI behavior is finished, Tomb Raider will be, more or less, fully playable in the Open Tomb engine.

Sad this isn't finished . I was hoping for something finished and comparable to the various DooM source engines that make playing Doom engine games so much more pleasurable. I'm currently playing TR4 and in the catacombs with the stupid ropes. Though I dearly love the Core TR games having played them since they first released in the 90's & 2000's, I have always loathed the ropes in TR4 as they are so picky and frustrating with the games not having a proper modern third person camera. I was hoping this was complete and had cheats so could get across the room and into the crawl space and skip the ropes.

Good luck on your Engine.
