The wine site is VERY confusing. And does Ubuntu already have wine on it?

2.0.3 if you're not interested in debugging. That's the most recent stable release. Check this page out if you're insatlling a new version of WINE: https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu

Not into wine, red or white but beer is AOK.
No. They have Ubuntu, Debian ... etc.. WINE HQ downloads. Should I go with the Ubuntu one or the latest stable 2.0.3?

Keeps saying unable to locate package wineHQ stable. And how do I re-enable 64 bit architecture?

I don't really know why you want to ask the same question twice, but here you go: Get WINE version 2.0.3 if you're not interested in debugging. That's the most recent stable release. The link I showed you gives the commands you would use to wget the file. You could also download the tarball and extract it, which would be the better choice if you're a novice Linux user and don't know how to use wget.

EDIT:

flatiron: how do I re-enable 64 bit architecture?
When you enable 32-bit, you don't disable 64-bit. You enable multiarchitecture support. You don't actually need to undo the add-architecture i386. If you absolutely have to get rid of the support you can use the "purge" command on the relevant files. See: https://askubuntu.com/questions/113301/how-to-remove-all-i386-packages-from-ubuntu-64bit

SECOND EDIT: Oh, Ubuntu doesn't fully implement multiarch? Teach me to use uglier distros. Looks like you may want to look at the Biarch WINE tutorial page. Sorry I didn't know that when typing out that first edit.

I hope I did not just do something stupid. I did what this page said http://sourcedigit.com/22831-install-wine-stable-2-0-3-release-on-ubuntu-17-10/

which was to jam this

sudo apt-get update
wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key && sudo apt-key add Release.key
sudo apt-add-repository https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-stable

into the terminal

it did some things

then I got "sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-stable"

then I hit enter then Yes...

Did I do wrong?

This was for 17.10, but wouldn't it be the same for 16.04.3?

How do I know if it is actually installed?

Installing quake says I need gecko and mono. What exactly should I search for in the software store?

I'd use the commands from the Ask Ubuntu pages:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/2943/how-can-i-check-if-a-package-is-installed-no-superuser-privileges
https://askubuntu.com/questions/423355/how-do-i-check-if-a-package-is-installed-on-my-server

Depending on your priv situation it looks like one of those should be what you need.

That post contain some images of the issue. still need to upload 3 more but it won't let me.

What does this mean?

"apt-cache policy wine
wine:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 1:1.6.2-0ubuntu14.2
Version table:
1:1.6.2-0ubuntu14.2 500
500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates/universe amd64 Packages
1:1.6.2-0ubuntu14 500
500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe amd64 Packages"

And is there anyway to undo all the damage I have done?

If you need Wine only to run Windows software and you aren't really interested in messing with command line too much, I found PlayOnLinux to be much more convenient. I was just too damn lazy for all that so POL was a blessing for me. ;)
I keep getting winsock IPX fail

You haven't really done any damage. The biggest roadblock to learning Linux is the fear that you're going to break everything and it'll explode, but you've broken nothing. So don't fret.

Since you're simultaneously asking on an actual Ubuntu forum and here, I'll stop chiming in and let some wiser Ubuntu user guide you, but keep in mind that all you've done so far is get a WINE build, and install it with updates. There are more steps you'll apparently need to do to get everything working, but since my advice has been less than perfect (I didn't know Ubuntu didn't do multiarch!) I'll shut up for a bit. You're fine. Don't sweat it. Linux never works the first time ^_^
That ubuntu forum is slooooow though...... O_O

Cept POL hadn't had any update for a long time. Might as well use or [url=http://q4wine.brezblock.org.ua/]Q4Wine instead.

I have never used Lutris before but it looks like... well... one client for linux gaming to rule them all. And all I want is a relatively easy to understand tool to manage some Wine games and prefixes. Does Lutris offer anything other than install scripts?

I haven't used Lutris much, it does a good job managing your games wenether it's native, wine or an emulator.

In that case i suggest checking out Q4Wine. Compared to POL, Q4Wine is relatively easy to use and has a built-in Winetricks (Requires installing/updating 1st. Not necessary for each prefix) and AppDB. Also if you don't feel like running Winecfg, you can set up the library for the specific executable.
