morolf: You shouldn't really write that when you're in Afghanistan...people there don't take kindly to blasphemy!
Really, like people aren't being persecuted and/or gunned down in the streets over in the USA for committing "heresy"? :P

The US does have unpleasant fundies (the likes who kill abortionists etc.), but it's really much worse in Afghanistan/Pakistan which is extremely intolerant even compared to many other majority Islamic countries.
Just a few days ago this happened in Pakistan:

Note the killers in that case were university students.

I've just finished Gothic 2 (wrote about my impressions in the "Games finished" thread).
Haven't started anything new...maybe I'll play Simon the sorceror 1 which I've had for a few years, but never really played.

morolf: Anyway, I read an interview with Germany's chief Protestant in German magazine SPIEGEL today...and he basically stated he wants research for that banned because it's against God's design or some similar nonsense.
Someone clearly skipped the Old Testament stuff where people regularly lived for hundreds of years.

But I'm 100% against longer life spans. Can you imagine the mega-hipsters we'd get if everyone lived that long? Humanity would become absolutely insufferable. "Holodecks? Psh, just another motion control fad. Now sit down and let me tell you the story of the Nintendo Wii."

It'd probably be pointless, anyway. We'd only end up living long enough to be murdered or killed off by some horrible disease. Or famine resulting from the massive overpopulation that'd probably ensue.

But think of all the games you could play if you lived to 500!

morolf: Do any of you have an opinion about radical life extension? I think that's really fascinating, I really hope there's some breakthrough in the next few decades...if it was possible, living to 200 or 500 would be great. Anyway, I read an interview with Germany's chief Protestant in German magazine SPIEGEL today...and he basically stated he wants research for that banned because it's against God's design or some similar nonsense. I really hate those god-mongers trying to hold up research and progress.
I think that it would appeal to most people (The thing I will miss most about dying is not seeing how the future develops). However, I have also been saying for some time that if a cure for cancer was found, it would endanger the future of humanity as the current aging population (of which I am one) is proving to be a burden on most countries already. Not that I am currently a burden, being in reasonable health. However, the day someone has to come and get me out of bed in the morning is the day I reach for a large plastic bag.

With regard to progress, I am fascinated by it. (Although not much good at it - I still use XP and my mobile is a steam driven Nokia). If you draw a graph, with the horizontal axis for time (say 1,000 years), and the vertical for progress (gunpowder, scientific thinking, automobile, industrial revolution, flight, jet power, miniturisation, computers, space flight, then the line is a radius which is approaching the vertical - at which point we will know everything at once. Of course if you interpret this a little differently, the sum of all human knowledge is already available to all through the interweb thingy.

I may be visiting this thread a lot - I have lots to discuss with people from different countries / cultures.
Ted Nugent is awesome! Tend to get branded as a racist for saying that these days. >_<

Counter point: imagine the backlog one would have after 500 years. Truly horrifying.

I can understand that, but I fear offing oneself actually is far harder than one thinks when one actually is in that situation...
Obviously radical life extension would raise serious questions (will it make overpopulation even worse?), but it's a fascinating idea...there's so much that's interesting in the world and that I'd like to explore. Maybe it will always remain a dream, but there seems to be research in that direction that's at least somewhat promising (e.g. I recently read about some tests where old mice were injected blood plasma of young mice - and were rejuvenated by it!).
Is this really him?

Inquisition 2.0
Basically now church wants to ban humanity from interstar travels.
Obey.
"don' t look outside, look here - you have everything written in this book. everything you need to know"
This reminds me of Pakistan incident.

Is that Kim-Jong-Un breakdancing????
Don't think it's authentic...but if it is it's probably from his youth (iirc he went to school in Switzerland).

Well the young will love to hear that. We live longer and deny them homes, there are less houses available so those left are too expensive to buy / rent. They pay taxes for our healthcare. They'll be too old to enjoy any inheritance we may leave them. And now, we're coming for their blood!

As a gamer I expect this experiment to work, it's a well known fact that vampires are immortal.

Well, nobody believes that too in the comment section.
But maybe he took lessons from Samo Hung...
Kim-Jong-Un definitely shouldn't get radical life extension...I hate that guy.
