realkman666: The fanbase is at a critical high, their reputation is bulletproof. It's the perfect moment to try and crush the competition. Once AMD retreats to APUs and mobile CPUs, Nvidia will have free reign over the GPU market.

Roxolani: It's possible, but did other companies do this before? Similar frauds by great names in computer hardware market? I'm interested to know it.
Why do you call it a fraud? They just misrepresented one product and don't own up to it.

Klumpen0815: I neither like Nvidia's business methods nor AMD's silly marketing and power consumption and I certainly don't like how both of them are treating Linux.
This would be the perfect moment for a new guy on the block with kick-ass Linux drivers and lower power consumption.
I thought Nvidia were fine now on Linux?

Only because some people made backwards engineering and wrote their own driver, Nvidia didn't do anything.

Oh, is that the Nouveau stuff? I get mocked by Nbots all the time for my crappy AMD drivers.

Exactly. I have the crappy AMD drivers too running here...

I just had to modify one package to not check for a certain file, repackage the package and install it from the command line, before doing the driver update and thus bypassing the conflicted file with Wine. What's the big deal? :D
I don't like the way nVidia and fanboys of them like to say it is a PR only problem the one with 970. IMHO, it is an engineering sneaky way of having 4GB of VRAM working great on paper in order to fool many people who wanted to go 4K or SLI later and when some games came out which used the last half GB and proved their guiltiness, they tired to avoid crtitics and responsibility. Things are clear. They lied or at least they hide the truth about the real potential of their GPU. Whoever likes that, no problem. But it isn't normal to buy a high end card spending so much money with a look to the future games and when time comes, it is soundly proved that it can't handle them because it isn't what it showed at first. I am too sure that MANY of the ones who bought it, wouldn't do it if they knew it from the start.

#sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver
#nvidia-settings
ctrl+alt+backspace
Done! ^^

Yeah, but then you're stuck with an Nvidia card.

nVidia's infamous marketing of the GeForce4 MX comes to mind here. IIRC, the GeForce4 MX's core technology was purported to be based off of the same tech in the GeForce4 Ti. Instead it was just a revamped GeForce 2.

Do you have a good detailed article about it? Link please if it's available online.

There are reviews of GeForce4 MX440 cards that [url=http://www.techspot.com/old-articles/reviews/hardware/xtasy_gf4mx440/index.shtml]outline the issue. Like with the GTX 970, one could argue that nVidia didn't necessarily lie about the capabilities of the GeForce4 MX, and it worked well enough for its intended price level. But nevertheless the card was marketed such that people could be misled as to how powerful it really was.

Not all scams work. Microsoft sits in a very cushy position convincing us we need to buy their *NEW* OS every few years... Not every OS push works... Seems every other one fails... Who was it that said they skip an OS every time and it works fairly well? If GoG's search engine was better i could probably link his thoughts...

What else can you expect from a company that names itself after one of the seven deadly sins? Come on guys, I know this isn't the Sherlock Holmes mystery hour, but you can do better than that. Esoteric amateurs.

Hey, what's the Latin phrase for 'we're gonna fuck over every person we meet'? Yeah, let's put that on the marquis in really big letters! Those suckers will never figure it out.
