Building castles in the sky.

No Man's Sky, the ambitious open-space exploration game in a procedurally-generated universe, just received a massive update appropriately named NEXT.

It brings a whole bunch of changes and additions across the board, most notably:

- Option to switch between first and third person view at will
- Visual upgrades to ships, NPCs, buildings, terrain textures, space vistas - pretty much everything
- You can now build far more complex bases anywhere on the planet
- Build your own fleet, upgrade it, and send it out or keep it close while exploring a system

The multiplayer element of NEXT is not yet included in the DRM-free edition of the game. Read more about the delay below:

"From launch, the DRM-free edition of No Man's Sky will include all single-player content introduced by NEXT: third-person mode, upgraded visuals, better base building, player customization, and more.

However the multiplayer component will not be ready at launch; we expect it to be released later this year as full multiplayer parity remains in the pipeline.

For a small, independent studio, developing the feature across multiple platforms is a hugely ambitious and technical challenge which resulted in this delayed release. Hello Games is however joining forces with GOG.COM to introduce full multiplayer via the GOG Galaxy platform.

We appreciate your immense support and patience.

- Hello Games & GOG.COM Team"
Cool beans.

So now that we're getting shafted for buying the game on GoG, are you going to force HG to refund those of us who want a refund so we can actually play the game with all the features other players have?

Credit card companies are great a dealing with issues like these, but you guys will end up having to pay extra charge back fees for every person that does this.

Better to offer refunds, it'll be less damaging financially.

Akoyumi: Definitely done with GOG now. Guess I will buy on steam.
You're done with GOG...because of the actions of an individual developer?

OMG. So much waiting and now this bomb?

That's it, I'm outta here. No more money from me, GOG. Seriously, screw you guys, I'm going home.

Extantient: still considering doing just that

wolfsite: I wouldn't, there customer support is horrible and the store is just flooded with shovelware with really bad curation.
Store doesn't matter if you use your brain, shovelware is easily identified
Customer support?
Well here there is basicly none concerning NMS so if you had to have NMS...you should probably get it on Steam
This is deeply disappointing news. My hopes were really crushed. ugh.

EVERYONE!

Just note that this isn't GoG's fault. They don't control what the developers develop or don't develop. Blame Hello Games for this.

However! What GoG CAN but most likely WON'T do is hold HG accountable for their actions and force them to offer refunds to those who ask for a refund.

If you're Australian, this is a legal right.

If you're not Australian, feel free to contact your credit card company and ask them to charge back the payment. Explain the situation. They will do it without any complaints if you have a half decent bank.

Do give GoG the opportuntiy to refund you first though, because charge backs will cost them not only the money they have to refund, but extra fees on top of that.
Oh jump right off the damned edge. Bought this game pre-release all that time ago through GOG because I like supporting the platform, and I love the old games they offer, but releasing a crippled version of the game until "later this year", on top of the zero communication before release, is enough to make me go pick it up on sale on Steam. Think of your damned customers next time, maybe, if you want to keep them.

I see the point of the post, the comment was a little ill directed though. The point is more along the lines of developers treating gog users like second rate citizens. Not entirely GOG's fault but a valid reason not to trust releases on the platform.

Extantient: sure, but they post updates on store pages and all my other games are there. this is the only game i have from GOG.
Just checked the store page for No Man's Sky and they do have the NEXT update listed.

I used to have all my games on Steam but the game Client was actually preventing me from playing the games I legally bought, I had an IT person look at it and we found a work-around and he told me to send the data to Steam so they could be made aware of the issue and fix it.

Instead they sent me an E-mail demanding I cease any attempt to Circumvent the Steam client and DRM or else they would ban/delete my account, so thanks to DRM there are games on Steam I legally bought but am not allowed to play. This is why DRM free is important.
I spy third person mode there. I really found the game interesting when I saw the first trailer, and if I ever had anything that could run it I'd buy it from a sale some day, because third person.

I'm not going to have anything that I can run it, though. But really liking the work they are doing.
I have always wanted a fleet. ;_;

Eh I never cared for multiplayer in the first place. I brought it here cause it was 20 bucks cheaper than steam. Being DRM free is always helpful. People really need to calm the hell down. While steam has 50% off if multiplayer is all they care about.

As a pre-day 1 supporter and player, HG defender through the entire launch shitstorm, someone incredibly patient with delayed updates compared to other platforms...

I'm livid.
Can we at least be offered Steam keys, HG? :/

(I also find it hilarious that my friends on Steam, who bashed the game and me for liking it... are now playing MP together. While I can't. Hahahah. :| )

edit: I should probably mention I'm still really proud of HG for putting so much effort into their game. My anger is directed at the shafting of their GOG player base. I know game dev is incredibly complex and there must have been deals and deadlines with other platforms that couldn't be delayed... but to treat your GOG clients differently than Steam, when they're on the same platform, really sucks. Why couldn't Steam wait, for once, until the GOG version is brought up to speed?

Will the Multiplayer also support Cross Play between GOG Users and Steam Users? Or are you only working on GOG Users only MP?

Would be great to get an answer to that question because I would buy the Gog Version only if I will be able to play with my Steam Friends when the MP is also online for the GOG Version.

Probably better to contact Hello Games directly about that, I don't think anyone from the developer hangs out on these forums.

yeah i totally get why DRM free is nice, thats WHY i bought NMS here in the first place, i wasnt on steam at the time -

its only JUST been updated on GOG. for months there has been no NEXT content posted, there sitll is no trailer or screenshots, and thats just pretty ridiculous in my opinion.

my update is finished so i will play it, but i may still just spend the 50% off on steam out of principle and convenience.

i dont much want to have 2 game clients running
