Building castles in the sky.

No Man's Sky, the ambitious open-space exploration game in a procedurally-generated universe, just received a massive update appropriately named NEXT.

It brings a whole bunch of changes and additions across the board, most notably:

- Option to switch between first and third person view at will
- Visual upgrades to ships, NPCs, buildings, terrain textures, space vistas - pretty much everything
- You can now build far more complex bases anywhere on the planet
- Build your own fleet, upgrade it, and send it out or keep it close while exploring a system

The multiplayer element of NEXT is not yet included in the DRM-free edition of the game. Read more about the delay below:

"[i]From launch, the DRM-free edition of No Man's Sky will include all single-player content introduced by NEXT: third-person mode, upgraded visuals, better base building, player customization, and more.

However the multiplayer component will not be ready at launch; we expect it to be released later this year as full multiplayer parity remains in the pipeline.

For a small, independent studio, developing the feature across multiple platforms is a hugely ambitious and technical challenge which resulted in this delayed release. Hello Games is however joining forces with GOG.COM to introduce full multiplayer via the GOG Galaxy platform.

We appreciate your immense support and patience.

Thank you GOG and HelloGames for still providing the 1.5 update DRM free, and still not requiring the Galaxy client for the single player game.

I bought NMS as a single player game and couldn't give two hoots about installing a client which will probably be found to be exploitable in due course making my computer less secure than a whores knickers

Very grateful that I can still grab the Offline Manual Installation files to install the still single player game, and not be rail roaded into needing the client running aswell. That being the whole point I buy at GOG, so I dont have to install a Steam client, the day the Galaxy client does become mandatory, I may aswell buy from steam who at least have matured enough in their programming experience to be able to shore up the holes the NSA used to use to walk into peoples machines via their client. I doubt GOG Galaxy is anywhere near as secure.

X.

How difficult it is to issue something along these lines BEFORE the no multi bomb:

"Dear {username}, unfortunately we have to delay the NEXT update due to Hello Games having issues with Multiplayer feature on our platform. Please be aware that the game may be updated excluding multiplayer support for GOG. We are however working with them to resolve the issue. We will keep you updated. Regards, your friendly GOG team."

Simple as that. I would have no issue then. But not when they spin all that hype, then delay the update 8 hours with no comms WHATSOEVER, and then when it finally arrives, they drop that bomb. This is not the way you treat a paying customer. That is my issue with GOG.

Xwaste: I just wish you would have told us a bit earlier is all, rather than waiting to the very last second.

I can have patience and wait, It was the time spent watching the updates roll out to others and starting to get excited and having it pulled out from under me right at the end that annoyed me.

It felt somewhat cheap and cowardly not to be up front with us earlier.
This is easily one of my biggest qualms with the way this was handled. I would have liked notice ahead of time so that I could be like: "Well this sucks, but at least it's coming later." Whereas now I'm of a mixed mind of: this sucks, the way this was handled sucks, and I guess it's coming later...As long as we hold them to it.

Sikklid: EXCEPT the biggest aspect, the Multiplayer, in this update being advertised on "PC" not just Steam. So the update was fasly advertised. Like ordering a steak dinner, but told the steak "part" will be done later - but hey enjoy the rest of the meal right? Yeah, no.
Incorrect. One can get the Multiplayer on "PC" via steam. If one doesn't want to or for any non-technical reason is unable to - it's one's problems. No false advertising whatsoever.

yogsloth: Oh good, another game where Galaxy is mandatory in order to play.
"" Any Borg mothership requires staffing and staffing requires dollars, Ad dollars are easiest, Ad dollars lead to tracking, Tracking requires the race to understand all there is to know about your customers or tracking has no sale-able value.

I don't consider myself a Trekkie but I seriously doubt The Borg pay their employees. :P

NatsuruNat: headline "DRM-free multiplayer"
bottom of the news: "introduce full multiplayer via the GOG Galaxy platform."
tell me lies
Exactly. Which is it? They claim that there will be DRM-free multiplayer, and they also claim that DRM will be required in order to access multiplayer.
Awesome!
Thank you so much - Hello Games & GOG.COM Team
Love the game from the beginning. <3
Thank you!! GOG for DMR-free i really appreciate all of your efforts in keeping this platform alive.

I have no care for multiplayer in NMS even if it was available at launch in the DMR-free version it would never get used, though i can fully understand why some peoples would be upset but the multiplayer issue is clearly not the fault of GOG just buy NMS on a service that does support multiplayer problem solved no need to get angry and ruin your day.

I also totally understand the difficulty HG would be facing in getting multiplayer working across all service's and unfortunately for some GOG seems to be last on the priority list and again there are other options available.

Finally! thank you!! HG for not giving up and continuing to refine your masterpiece NMS....
Maybe standalone server software to run muliplayer NMS game on LAN?

Quite so. Either gog.com's team, HG team, or perhaps both - were a bit late with this message. Even if there were technical uncertainties, with the release of this magnitude it's inevitable people are jumping to (often wrong) conclusions when steam has the product released while gog does not and there is silence about it.

But not too late. "Good save" if you'd ask me. If they'd delay the message for about few more hours, the story would then totally be about "delayed for a day for gog release", which is quite worse. So it seems they quite rationally estimated the risks. And probably tried to make it work for the last damn moment they could still attempt to make it work and include to the gog release.

Let me tell you a little something about how difficult it can be at times. See, many "lesser" steam projects struggle for _years_ to make their various multiplaeyer modes to work, and some fail to ever have it for more than just small percentage of people who just happen to have ideally-fitting internet service providers, network settings, etc. Troubleshooting network functionality in such projects typically involves dozens of possible causes of non-functioning MP for every specific case, some of which take quite an IT professional to troubleshoot (which most users are obviously not). And then Gog Galaxy is way less known and less supported network infrastructure, which only adds further trouble trying to make it work, too. We talk about master servers, proprietary network protocols, bugs in them, lack of documentation about certain features, even lack of comments in certain critically important pieces of code needed to make whole thing work, because coders who created those bits in the past are no more working and nobody knows how the hell their code work (but it does, so nobody is re-writing those pieces).

And then you throw "we prefer no-DRM" on top of it all, see. So yep, lots of work to do, and to do together, for gog and HG if they'd want MP happen for gog version. No surprise.

I'd say we should be more grateful than critical, overall, for them posting this message. And wish them luck working on it. Which i do! :)

Is there not a patch?

I see the main downloads show 1.5, but there's only a patch for 1.38.

Unless you have automatic updates turned off, NMS should have begun updating as soon as you launched Galaxy.

Unless you don't use Galaxy...
